Amazon Greenlights God of War Series

Kratos is coming to live-action, but he’s missing a few beats. Amazon Prime Video has greenlit a God of War TV series, which will be produced by Amazon Studios, Sony Pictures Television, and PlayStation Productions. Rafe Judkins, whose resume includes The Wheel of Time, Agents of SHIELD, and Hemlock Grove, will act as showrunner, with Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, who wrote Iron Man, Children of Men, Cowboys and Aliens, and The Expanse, producing and writing the series. The show will focus on Kratos’ adventures in Midgard, the Norse Realm, meaning they’re starting with the fourth game in the series rather than the first because of course they are. No timeline for the series has been set.

I’m not all that excited about this, and a lot of that has to do with eschewing the first three games – the bulk of Kratos’ story so far – and starting with his battle against the Norse Gods. I’m sure they’re doing this to tie it into the modern games better, but I don’t care; I want to see Kratos’ journey unfold from the beginning, not from the midway point. Those three games are incredible, and they’ll be flashbacks at best in the show. Rafe Judkins doesn’t inspire much confidence either; Agents of SHIELD sucked, and I haven’t heard anything good about The Wheel of Time. I have, on the other hand, heard lots of good things about The Expanse, and I loved Iron Man and Children of Men and liked Cowboys and Aliens a lot, so Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are pluses. But I don’t like this direction, and I tend to think this will be another Amazon misfire.
