Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Clip is Dull

The hype train for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is burning coal as fast as it can. A clip from the film has been released through Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s… not great. It involves Shuri, Okoye, and Riri Williams, and since these are the new leads, it gives good insight into how much Chadwick Boseman will be missed. You can see the clip below:

I’m sure this will appeal to some people, but it’s hard to believe this will get anyone excited for Wakanda Forever. It’s supposed to be funny, but it’s the new, relentless Marvel humor that doesn’t know when or how to insert itself into a scene. Riri Williams calls Okoye’s head “ashy;” ain’t she a stinker!? There are also some big moral implications – which, I’m sure, will go unaddressed – with Shuri and Okoye showing up in Riri’s room and kidnapping her. Is anyone going to tell them this is not okay? Maybe there are extenuating circumstances, but I doubt this kid is some kind of threat that necessitates flouting international law. To be fair, Wakanda has always been comfortable with that, but it was for important things like terrorists who killed their king or Wakandan criminals who stole their resources – not some American teenager. I’m jumping the gun, but considering Marvel’s twisted morality of late – especially when it involves women – I can see them just not dealing with this. Otherwise, it’s really bland and not the least bit enticing. Nobody’s funny, nobody’s endearing, nothing cool happens; it’s confusing why Marvel chose this scene to sell the movie. There is the requisite “I LIKE her!” from an established character to let the audience know who their new favorite is; that worked gangbusters for Carol Danvers, didn’t it?
