Box Office Breakdown for Weekend of 5/18/25

What’s up, Geeks + Gamers? It’s ODIN!

Final Destination Bloodlines Opens to Monster +$100 Million Global Opening

As we enter the summer box office season, there is much speculation over which movies are expected to be financially successful and if the marketplace is ever going to see anything close to a financial recovery akin to the pre-COVID era. Though there are still too many unknowns for what the future will hold, we can say that this weekend was a massive victory for the Final Destination franchise. Not only did the latest film open to over $100 million globally, but it saw roughly $51 million just from the domestic market, which puts it towards the higher end of where some of the weekend estimates had originally put it. With the traditional box office tracking only expecting a bit over $35 million, the fact that Final Destination Bloodlines came in roughly 45% higher can only be taken as a huge win for the film and the team behind it. Add to this that the estimated budget is only listed as being about $50 million, and the film is already well on its way to making its money back and moving towards what will likely be some decent profits. Though Final Destination Bloodlines is still technically -$26 million in the red, it isn’t difficult to see that the movie will break even, most likely by next weekend and possibly as late as next Sunday.

The outlook for Final Destination Bloodlines gets even better when you consider the audience reaction being as strong as it is for a movie that is not likely to appeal to the broadest of demographics. On Criticless, the film currently sits at a solid 73% “Rad” score with roughly 21 reviews currently posted. With the mixed-to-mostly-positive-leaning reviews that I have seen across various platforms, it is clear that Final Destination Bloodlines is destined for some financial success and will likely have a decent run on VOD and physical media as well.

According to the-numbers.com, the top 5 this weekend domestically were:

  1. Final Destination Bloodlines ($51,000,000 in opening weekend)
  2. Thunderbolts* (49% drop in 3rd weekend)
  3. Sinners (30% drop in 5th weekend)
  4. A Minecraft Movie (23% drop in 7th weekend)
  5. The Accountant 2 (26% drop in 4th weekend)

Thunderbolts* Continues to Drop as Sinners is Likely to Beat it Domestically

Though some still scoff at the idea that Thunderbolts* could end up beating the likes of Captain America: Brave New World, the movie continues to bring in money and see decent holds both domestically and internationally. It currently sits at about $325,727,643 globally, which is roughly $54 million more than last weekend’s projections. Though I will say it is not very likely that Thunderbolts* will break even at the box office, it continues to track ahead of the daily numbers domestically put forward by Brave New World… therefore, the advantage that Brave New World has in its global opening continues to shrink and seems to point to the inevitability of Thunderbolts* crossing $415 million at the global box office before its box office run concludes. Since it only needs about another $90 million, and with schools starting to let out for the summer, there could very well be enough gas left in the tank for the film to exceed the numbers posted by Cap 4

The story is very different for Sinners, which not only started making its money back last weekend after a precarious (though arguably still very strong) opening compared to its massive-for-its-type budget of $90 million, but also in how much better Sinners is doing domestically than the latest movie from the MCU. At $240 million domestically, the film towers over not only the current domestic total of Thunderbolts*, which sits at only $155 million, but even the total domestic of Brave New World, which only reached $214 million. At the rate that Sinners continues to hold week to week, I would have to say that getting to about $400 million globally by the end of its run is absolutely on the table, which, now, after having seen about half of the movie myself, I must say is pretty insane. Whether I like it or not, however, matters little in the box office game, as Sinners will continue to add to its profits, which currently sit at almost $20 million in net gains. The larger-than-needed budget continues to drag the movie’s profits down, but we all know at this point that it is well on its way to making some serious cash once the VOD and physical media sales start to come in. The movie currently sits at an insanely high 78% “Rad” score over on Criticless, with 81 reviews currently posted.
