Captain Marvel Pictures Released

Marvel might be done releasing movies in 2018, but they’re making sure the MCU stays on everyone’s minds as Entertainment Weekly has just released a series of pictures from the set of next year’s Captain Marvel. Brie Larson, who plays Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in the film, teased the reveal in a Twitter exchange with the industry magazine yesterday (very similarly to how Robert Downey Jr. and Marvel Studios let the world know we’d be seeing Avengers: Infinity War a week early this March). Marvel regulars Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg will join Larson, as well as Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou from Guardians of the Galaxy, along with newcomers Ben Mendelsohn and Jude Law. Captain Marvel, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, will hit theaters on March 8, 2019.

This is so exciting! Everyone is, of course, waiting on baited breath for the sure-to-be-epic next Avengers movie, but Marvel is making Captain Marvel an event too. The plot appears to drop Carol Danvers smack in the middle of the Kree-Skrull War, meaning she’ll be dealing with two of Marvel’s premier alien races in a conflict that could see Earth destroyed in the maelstrom (a concept which I’m trusting Marvel Studios to do justice; I know this is blasphemy, but the comic story isn’t all that). I think I’m most excited to finally see the Skrulls on screen (officially; the Chitauri don’t count, as Joss Whedon well knew); aside from being terrific villains, they open a lot of doors for the MCU’s future, particularly as Marvel – via Disney – will soon have the rights to Super Skrull(s). Other than alien bad guys, Nick Fury looks like Samuel L. Jackson circa the late 90s, and like the other MCU de-aging effects, the results are phenomenal. I imagine Clark Gregg will go through a similar transformation. It’ll be neat to see them again, as well as Ronan the Accuser and Korath, although I hope there isn’t too much prequelitis in Captain Marvel (as in, too many characters we know are in no real danger). Everything else looks good; Jude Law looks like Jude Law, and Brie Larson looks like Captain Marvel. Now the wait for the trailer is on.
