CBS Passes on Lincoln Lawyer Pilot

Mickey Haller won’t be taking your case. Deadline reports that CBS has passed on the Lincoln Lawyer pilot. The show hails from iconic showrunner David E Kelley and would have starred The Glades’ Kiele Sanchez, who was to play office manager Lorna, and Logan Marshall-Green, who was set to succeed Matthew McConaughey in the title role following weeks of complicated negotiations. The trade notes that, given the high penalty associated with the pilot, shopping the show to another network is a strong possibility.

While I initially would have preferred them to have made another movie with the True Detective star, I have to admit, I was intrigued by what David E. Kelley would bring to the world of Michael Connelly’s bestselling novel series. Kelley is synonymous with the legal genre, so the idea that CBS would pass on this Lincoln Lawyer adaptation is something of a shock, especially given the fact that Connolly’s had a successful adaptation in Amazon Prime’s Bosch, starring Deadwood’s Titus Welliver. When it was first announced that they were having trouble looking for a lead for the Lincoln Lawyer series, I wasn’t surprised, since McConaughey is a tough act to follow. Ever since Upgrade, Marshall- Green has been one to watch, and I was excited to see what he might bring to the role. In the wake of this pandemic, the rulebook has been thrown out the window, with seemingly sure – not to mention expensive – bets being tossed aside, so I’m curious to see how other nascent productions will be affected. Hopefully, A+E studios will bring the project to Amazon, thereby opening the door to a crossover with Bosch down the road. I have a feeling we’ll know one way or the other in the coming weeks.

Are you upset that CBS has passed on The Lincoln Lawyer, or do you think this could be a blessing in disguise?
