CD Projekt Red is giving up on Cyberpunk 2077. According to the company’s quarterly earnings report, which was released today, no developers have been working on Cyberpunk 2077 as of April 30, 2024. Their bar graph indicates that all of their other games had an increase in development teams, aside from Hadar, which saw no difference. The other four games listed are all in development, including a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 called Orion, so it makes sense that they would have more developers than a three-and-a-half-year-old game, but Cyberpunk is a unique case. The game has been riddled with bugs and technical issues since it was released in 2020, and CD Projekt Red has spent the intervening years trying to fix the myriad problems with Cyberpunk. This led to plunging stock prices and lawsuits from investors. The removal of developers indicates that CD Projekt Red is finally throwing in the towel and leaving the game as is to focus on their upcoming slate.
I never played Cyberpunk 2077, but it was impossible to escape the bug stories. The game eventually became a punchline, the poster child for games released way too early and without proper testing and addressing of issues. CD Projekt Red even revamped the game with a massive update, and it still had to release more patches to fix technical issues. After that amount of time, it makes sense for them to finally leave it behind, although I think it’s ballsy of them to make a sequel. Even if it’s a great game, do they think gamers are going to trust them enough to buy it? They burned people pretty badly on the first one, especially when customers sought refunds for the defective game they bought and had trouble getting their money back. They can have Keanu Reeves wink at the screen all they want but it’s not going to win trust back from consumers who feel hoodwinked.
Critics are essentially obsolete now. The most entertaining thing they’ve done in years is whine about it.
I enjoyed the crap out of the game. Completed it at release on PC. I guess the game was a disaster on consoles but I don’t play there. I seldom finish games of this size just due to getting bored and moving on but I finished this. I honestly can’t remember if I experienced any bugs but if I did they weren’t game breaking.
Hype for the game was intense, and the backlash after release was equally ferocious. LOL
Having said this… CDPR has doubled down on their commitment to DEI so I’ve taken them off the menu. They won’t receive another cent from me.
Funnily, one of the accusations against them was that they sent journalists the PC copies to review so they wouldn’t report on the bugs. Shifty stuff like that makes the game’s problems even worse.
I’m a console guy, but seeing things like this, I completely understand PC gamers.
Everytime i need proof how biased certain popular “Game reviewers” are, I just look up their hype reviews from CP2077 and how much they shilled for it.
Yongyea, SkillUp, Alanah all dined & wined by the industry with free merch etc.
Unbelievable how many gamers still take these industry shills seriously.
