Escape Plan 2: Hades Gets Trailer

Bohemian Rhapsody wasn’t the only trailer to be released today; Lionsgate unveiled the first look at Escape Plan 2: Hades, a direct-to-video (aww) sequel to the 2013 action film that saw two genre legends share the screen. Sylvester Stallone is back, but Arnold Schwarzenegger sits out this prison break, replaced by rising star Dave Bautista. This time, Sly’s Ray Breslin must break one of his teammates out of another maximum security prison with an evil warden in order to expose a conspiracy. And there’s a third one of these on the way too! Well, if Clooney and Soderbergh could make three Ocean’s movies, I guess we can suspend disbelief for this apparently-now-a-franchise. Here’s the trailer…

While the direct-to-video release gives me great pause (I don’t care what apologists say; these movies are rarely watchable), and it won’t be the same without Schwarzenegger, Escape Plan 2: Hades looks like it could be fun. I’m hard-pressed to write off a Stallone action movie without seeing it, and while Bautista is no Arnold – not that anyone is, or ever will be – he’s shown great screen presence, even in largely silent roles. Casting Titus Welliver as the crooked warden is another point in its favor. The action looks to be a little more varied than its predecessor as well, with more scenes taking place outside the prison. Maybe this will end up being the rare Boondock Saints that should’ve been released in theaters; or maybe it’ll be something to watch on Netflix and immediately question your life choices. The latter is more likely, but never count Sly out too early.

What did you think of the trailer? Are you planning to see Escape Plan 2: Hades? Were you hoping for a direct-to-video sequel to Bullet to the Head instead? Let us know in the comments!
