Axel Foley’s bringing his old partners back into action with him. Filming is underway on the fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie, which is titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley (What’s with this trend of naming sequels after the main character, as if we somehow forgot who they were?), and a series of set pics have been making the rounds. The first set features Eddie Murphy as Axel, along with confirmed co-star Taylour Paige, courtesy of I_AM_EFREM of The Chronicles Efram:

Okay, that’s all well and good, but what about the old guard? Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt had been confirmed to appear, as has Paul Reiser as Foley’s actual partner in Detroit, Jeffrey. But the guys we’ve been holding out for almost as much as Murphy are Judge Reinhold and John Ashton as Detective Billy Rosewood and Sergeant John Taggart, the duo who team up with Foley when he arrives in Beverly Hills. (Although those aren’t their ranks anymore; when last we checked in with this universe, Rosewood had become an LAPD bigwig, and Taggart had retired.) Well, new photos from David Stokes confirm that Reinhold and Ashton are back too:

I know there are a million ways this could go wrong. Eddie Murphy hasn’t had much success since around 1996 when he starred in The Nutty Professor (at least in comedy); sequels to long-thought-finished movies don’t have the best track record (for every Top Gun: Maverick or Rambo, there are seemingly dozens of Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Die Hard sequels – even another Rambo one – we pretend don’t exist for the sake of our sanity); keeping the irreverent tone of the original will be difficult in the woke era; and the director, Mark Molloy, has never filmed a movie before this. But Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley is an icon, the perfect pairing of actor and character, and someone whose personality and presence have never been replicated. Seeing Murphy in the letterman jacket again and knowing that Rosewood and Taggart will be backing him up again makes you want to believe.
Do you think Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley will be any good? Are you glad Judge Reinhold and John Ashton are coming back?
