Fantastic Four Reshoots Worry Fans

The Fantastic Four are retracing their first steps. Marvel’s First Family will make their MCU debut in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, directed by WandaVision’s Matt Shakman, which will arrive in theaters on July 25, 2025, a little over two months from now. But recently, photos revealed that the film is currently undergoing reshoots in Los Angeles, with Julia Garner spotted shooting a scene on a beach. (The farthest back I can trace the images is to The Daily Mail, but they have a watermark for TheImageDirect.com, so presumably that site – the content on which is only accessible to members – is the source.) Garner plays the Silver Surfer, Galactus’ most famous herald, in the movie; actually, she plays a female version of the Surfer named Shalla-Bal who was in a couple of limited series where she was a secondary Silver Surfer in an alternate universe, the primary being the same one from the main 616 Marvel Universe, Norrin Radd. (What I mean by this is that she’s always been the Silver Surfer all the time forever, infinity, no take-backs, and also why can’t they do something different, and also it’s not even different, and also and also and also…) News of the Fantastic Four reshoots has fans worried – more so than they already were – for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, as reshoots this close to the movie’s release bring to mind such recent MCU instant classics as Captain America: Brave New World, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and The Marvels, all of which were also reshooting closer to their release dates than was typical, and all of which sucked and were bombs. That Marvel is still filming Fantastic Four reshoots isn’t a surprise since this seems to be how they operate nowadays. To be fair, these reshoots may not be that extensive; so far, only Julia Garner has been spotted, and she’s not even decked out like her version of the Silver Surfer, or in a motion-capture suit, which would be more likely for a character that appears to be mostly CGI. Instead, Garner looks like herself, and she’s wearing a white dress with blue coloring, sort of like you’d see on a t-shirt in a shop at a beach community. People are speculating that this scene takes place either before she becomes the Surfer or after she’s freed of it, if indeed this happens in First Steps. And if that’s the case, these reshoots could be a response to test screenings; maybe the audiences said they didn’t know enough about Shalla-Bal, so they’re filling in some blanks. If so, I don’t think that’s a big deal, even when it’s this close to the movie’s premiere. (I’ll bet the editors aren’t too thrilled about having to work overtime to splice these scenes in, though.) It’s also good that these scenes don’t seem to have any special effects, which would undoubtedly look awful at this late stage. And so far, it’s only Garner appearing in the Fantastic Four reshoots; the Four themselves, played by Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bacharach, are nowhere to be found. If they show up, it’ll be a better indication that the film is in trouble (which it may be, regardless of reshoots, but I mean from Marvel’s perspective). I’m sure plenty of fans in the vicinity will be keeping a close eye on the production in the coming weeks, and if these Fantastic Four reshoots are more intensive than they look right now, we’ll know about it.
