The final Rise of Skywalker trailer is here. It opens on Rey running through the forest as Finn talks about how the Force brought them together. Meanwhile, Poe tries to rally the Resistance, saying that the heroes can lead them, as we get a continuation of the conversations Rey and Kylo had in The Last Jedi. We hear Palpatine telling how he has waited, thus echoing the thoughts of fans all over the world. He remarks how the heroes coming together will be their undoing. This brings to mind that infamous line from Return of the Jedi, “Everything is proceeding as I have foreseen.” From there, we get a glimpse of Threepio getting one last look at his friends, perhaps tying into that moment from previous footage where he had red eyes. Amid various action sequences, Luke’s voice reminds us that Jedi must confront fear. As Rey prepares to face Palpatine, the Skywalkers remind Rey that the Force will be with her always. Appropriately enough, the last line of the trailer poetically goes to Leia on what would have been the 63rd birthday of our beloved princess.
While I really wanted to see more of Luke and Leia, I can’t deny there is an appropriate sense of melancholy that permeates the final Rise of Skywalker trailer. Throughout, we’re being reminded that this will be the last time we see the majority of these characters. Saying goodbye is always hard, but judging by this trailer, JJ and co. have definitely left everything out on the field. I, for one, can’t wait to see how this saga ends in December.
