HBO’s The Last of Us Gets a Trailer

The original The Last of Us is without question one of the most beloved and well-written video games ever created. However, the franchise has not been in such a healthy state recently. The Last of Us Part II came as an utter insult to its predecessor, abusing both the fan base and the characters they loved. With the precarious place that the second game left the franchise, many fans were concerned about the announced HBO series, especially considering the casting choices. The series now has a trailer that pushes right through these concerns.

This trailer reveals little to no story, so it’s unclear how closely the show will follow the game. However, the game’s look is captured to near perfection. Even entire sets and locations are beautifully recreated from the game’s best moments. The clickers and other zombies are also beautifully designed, taking original game fans back to the claustrophobic and compelling horror these monsters once provided. The Last of Us’s feel is there, but what about the story that made the game so special?

This may be simple fanservice for the trailer to entice the game’s players to engage with this series; the writing may pull the rug out from under them, similarly to The Last of Us Part II. The story and characters of The Last of Us may be ruined, but the care and effort to recreate the visuals cannot be denied. Regardless, hesitation and caution must be advised for all fans and any interested newcomers. The trailers for The Last of Us Part II also seemed incredible and worthy of pre-order, but its true nature came down hard. That may be the case once again.
