Hutch Takes a Vacation in the Nobody 2 Trailer

Family vacations can be murder;  some great films have been based on that concept, and now, Hutch Mansell is about to be the latest movie hero to discover this universal Hollywood truth. Today, Lionsgate released the trailer for Nobody 2, the sequel to the surprise hit (relative to its budget) 2021 action film from 87North. This time, Hutch, having once again become an assassin, takes some time off to go on vacation with his family, where he promptly runs afoul of a local criminal conspiracy and must kill his way through a new army of bad guys while trying to be a good, attentive husband and father. Bob Odenkirk once again plays Hutch, with Connie Nielsen, RZA, Colin Salmon, Michael Ironside, Billy MacLellan, Gage Munroe, Paisley Cadorath, and the legendary Christopher Lloyd also returning from the first film. Writer Derek Kolstad, who wrote the first Nobody (and created John Wick and wrote or co-wrote the first three Wick films), penned the script with Umair Aleem (Kate), Aaron Rabin (Jack Ryan), and Odenkirk. Not back is Nobody director Ilya Naishuller, presumably because he was busy shooting Heads of State; this time, Indonesian director Timo Tjahjanto is at the helm in his English language debut. Nobody 2 will arrive in theaters on August 15, 2025, and you can see the trailer below:

Mother of God, I love this trailer! I also loved Nobody, as I love pretty much everything from 87North, the production company that’s bringing the action genre back to greatness (give or take a Love Hurts here and there). Nobody 2 has been in development for some time, and unlike some of the other 87North films that are getting sequels (like my beloved Violent Night), Nobody actually lends itself to a follow-up adventure. Not only is Hutch a former off-the-books government assassin who would naturally have a long list of dangerous people who want him dead, but he mixed it up with the Russian Mafia in the first film, meaning he’s on the criminal world’s radar, too. There’s also the avenue of Hutch trying to keep his normal family intact while his past continues to intrude, which, based on the Nobody 2 trailer, the sequel is exploring. This time, the Mansell family is going on vacation to get away from the rigors of murder for hire, but they find themselves in danger once again. What’s interesting is that it isn’t just a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time or not being able to escape their troubles; Hutch seeks out violence, as he did in the first one, because it’s a drive he can’t entirely escape, no matter how hard he tries. But even this is a bit complicated because he goes on the warpath after someone hits his daughter. You can argue that he should have just let it go, but Nobody – and, it appears, Nobody 2 – is an examination of masculinity, and Hutch wouldn’t be able to look at himself in the mirror if he just let it go. (Eat that, Elsa.)

Nobody 2 trailer, Nobody, Nobody 2, Bob Odenkirk

Beyond that, the Nobody 2 trailer is just plain cool. The transition from one director to another looks seamless, and that’s largely because 87North painstakingly chooses its filmmakers, using only people who know how to film action well. The result is beautiful fight scenes that are chaotic without being confusing, and the ones in Nobody 2 appear to utilize their settings, particularly the amusement park. I also love casting Sharon Stone as the villain; she’s a great actress, and she seems to be letting loose and turning her character into the kind of psycho bad guy I’ve dearly missed in modern action cinema. (And after seeing that clip of her insulting Americans on foreign soil, there’s also some satisfaction in knowing she’s about to get annihilated by an average American family man in a movie.) I’m glad to see the whole surviving cast from Nobody return, especially Christopher Lloyd; watching Doc Brown mow down an army of evildoers was the cinematic miracle I never knew I always wanted. But maybe my favorite part of the Nobody 2 trailer is the use of Lindsey Buckingham’s “Holiday Road,” invoking National Lampoon’s Vacation; in fact, I’ll bet Nobody 2 is closer in spirit to Vacation than that obnoxious sequel/remake/reboot they inflicted on the world in 2015. I imagine Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo cameos would be too much to ask, but it would bring the house down if they showed up as Clark and Ellen Griswold, on vacation during Hutch’s hijinks. Even if 87North can’t swing that one, I’m very much looking forward to Nobody 2, and I’m more than happy to wish the rest of the summer movie season away to get to it.
