James Gunn Returns to Direct Guardians 3

It looks like James Gunn is about to take back the helm of the Milano. Deadline reports that, after seeing how the Suicide Squad director handled himself over the last several months, Alan Horn has reversed his decision and brought Gunn back into the fold to direct the third installment of the beloved Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. The plan is for production to begin on Guardians of the Galaxy 3 once Gunn completes work on Suicide Squad, which is set to be released in August of 2021. Since leaving the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, Gunn has diversified his résumé aside from developing the DC revamp by producing the horror film Brightburn, which, perhaps, is also in the superhero vein, and he has remained relatively quiet on the situation at Disney.

I really appreciated James Gunn’s attitude towards the whole thing. Rather than dwell on what he lost, he dove into a brand new project that he could put his stamp on while still leaving his creative imprint on his then-former franchise via the script. While I was curious to see who would succeed Gunn at the helm (something that most other directors have seemed to be against doing), I’m thrilled that the controversial filmmaker is returning to complete his story. The only question I have left (aside from what Adam Warlock’s first meeting with the Guardians will be like) is whether Gunn will continue to advise on the Marvel cosmic universe, as was Fiege’s original plan. The idea of him doing a trilogy and then moving into an advisory position was very intriguing, so I’m glad this idea might yet come to fruition.
