James Wan to Develop Aquaman Sequel

James Wan is planning his next trip to Atlantis. Deadline reports that development has begun on the Aquaman sequel, but that Wan is waiting for the right story to come along. While I’m very excited to hear that Wan is staying on board after the success of my favorite comic book film of 2018, I’m of two minds about this news. On the one hand, I’m a little surprised that Wan isn’t going to be writing a treatment for the Aquaman sequel right from the jump. Wan has had a hand in this scripts of all his directorial projects. On the other hand, it’s possible he’s merely taking the Christopher Nolan route and waiting for the right story idea to come along.

Aquaman sequel

With both his horror and superhero success with Warner Bros., it’s easy to see why the studio would very much be in Wan‘s corner with the Aquaman sequel, especially with studio head Toby Emmerich reaffirming the Warner Bros.’s policy of being a filmmaker-first company. While some may want to adhere to the Marvel model releasing multiple films a year in a shared continuity, betting on their filmmakers is a strategy that has paid off for Warner Bros. time and again. Look no further than this week’s Christopher Nolan news. Between Wan staying on for the Aquaman sequel and all the recent DC news – from the teaser for the Harley Quinn/Birds of Prey spinoff to the summer 2021 release date for The Batman (sans Ben Affleck) – it would appear that they’ve been able to separate the Chris Nolan brand from the DC brand, a separation that for the last several years has been a very difficult transition for DC. It’s comforting to know that the DCEU is in good hands, and I can’t wait to see what Wan and all the other DC filmmakers bring us.
