Javier Grillo-Marxuach Talks Cowboy Bebop

We have new insight into what we can expect when everyone’s favorite bounty hunter crew comes to Netflix. In a recent interview with io9, writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach discussed what fans can expect from the highly-anticipated live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, explaining how the show is going to be able to express some of the weirder aspects of the iconic anime. He even gave a bit of insight into how they’re going to expand some of the thirty-minute stories to fit an hour-long Netflix drama. This will mean broadening Spike’s story, akin to, as the article notes, Geralt in The Witcher. While that may sound vague, to me, it gives a pretty solid idea of how this world is going to be presented in live-action. Additionally, Javier Grillo-Marxuach was also refreshingly honest about some of the things that the production is going to change, such as the degree of smoking, as well as some of Faye’s outfits.
Overall, this is excellent news, and I love how committed they are to staying faithful to the source material. While it’s easy to cry censorship regarding the smoking or Faye’s outfits, anime has always offered idealized depictions that probably wouldn’t fit in a live-action adaptation. For me, things like this are simply a matter of aesthetic. Ultimately, it comes down to whether or not they’re going to capture the spirit of the series, which, judging by Javier Grillo-Marxuach’s comments, definitely seems to be the case. I can’t wait to see what they achieve with the show down the road.

Finally watching the anime for the first time, and hot damn is it bursting with awesome atmosphere and style. Am I expecting Netflix to hold a candle to this show? Uhh, not really.. x3

I loved watching the mental gymnastics of these women on twitter trying to explain why cosplayers, some of whom spend whole days at comic-cons in the faye costume can pull it off, but an actor can’t
As always I will wait and see. If I hear good things then I will watch it. If I don’t hear good things then I won’t watch it
I’m going to give it a watch but I’m not expecting much. I have the original anime still on Blu-Ray so I’m happy.
I feel that they are going to ruin it. The original Cowboy Bebop never glamorized smoking. It fit to the characters because of their story. They never tried to make it seem like it was a good thing. If they aren’t going to stick to the story, they should just make their own bounty hunter show. That’s how I see it. Netflix hasn’t made any good live action adaptations. Why would I trust them to now.
