Alias Investigations is opening for business again. The TV upfronts, a series of presentations to advertisers, are currently being held in New York City, and yesterday was Disney’s, during which they announced that Krysten Ritter will return as Jessica Jones in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, which is currently filming and set to hit Disney+ in March of 2026. Ritter played Jessica Jones, a private investigator with super strength working out of a ramshackle apartment in Hell’s Kitchen, in three seasons of her own series on Netflix, and she teamed up with Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist in The Defenders. Rumors have been swirling for a few years that Jessica Jones would show up on Born Again and possibly get her series resurrected as well, ever since Ritter posted a picture of herself with Luke Cage actor Mike Colter on her Instagram account. Ritter appeared at Disney’s upfront presentation and said this about her return to the role (via Variety):
“It’s so great to be back, returning to Jessica after three seasons and ‘The Defenders’ and now joining the MCU… I’m so excited to bring back this iconic character, and without giving too much away, there is much more in store for Jessica Jones. This is going to be an incredible season!”
I remember a time when I would have been excited by this. I loved Kristen Ritter as Jessica Jones, and I thought the first season of her show was excellent; I didn’t like the second one and never watched the third, but Ritter was terrific in the part. I also liked The Defenders a lot more than most people seem to have, and I especially enjoyed Jessica’s interactions with Matt Murdock; his Catholic morality bounced off of her hard-drinking, cynical worldview well, and they made a good contrast. I also tend to think Jessica will be joined by Luke Cage and Iron Fist at some point, which, considering where Born Again ended, would make sense, since New York is basically being held hostage. It would be neat to see how Jessica and the others deal with the Punisher, too; I wonder if Jessica would be all that opposed to Frank’s brand of justice, especially considering the evil she’s experienced. And seeing the Defenders saddle up to take on the Kingpin and his forces would be epic.
Unfortunately, all of this is happening under the Marvel regime that produced She-Hulk, Loki, Ms. Marvel, and Echo for Disney+, all of which were awful. And, sadly, that list includes Daredevil: Born Again, which had such a terrible first season that I couldn’t believe they touted it as the revamped, vastly improved version of the show. Season 2 is on deck, and while I liked the final episode more than the rest and hoped it would lead to a better second season, the time that’s past has highlighted its flaws to me, and I don’t have high hopes that this show will right itself. Now that Krysten Ritter is officially going to show up as Jessica Jones, I’m not so much excited to see her again as I am worried about how these writers will destroy yet another great character. Much like Matt Murdock, Jessica is such a particular character, and it takes people who understand her to write her dialogue and plot her actions, and time and again, we’ve seen the Born Again writers prove that they don’t get Matt or Wilson Fisk. Jessica has the advantage of already being a seriously damaged, flawed hero, but she’s entering a world where flaws are considered virtues, women are not allowed to be three-dimensional, and nobody knows how to make a woman anything but grating and shrill. Jessica deserves much better than I fear Marvel is currently capable of giving her, and Krysten Ritter may be walking into a minefield when she joins Daredevil: Born Again. I hope that’s not true, that they somehow completely turn this show around, but I doubt they will.
