May the Fourth Made Official by California Legislature

It looks as though the force is with Anaheim. The Associated Press reports that, via a resolution by Assemblyman Tom Daly, the California Legislature has declared May the fourth – Star Wars Day – an official holiday in the state ahead of the opening of the Disney theme park Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, which will be taking place later this month. This news gave me a good laugh at first. “May the Fourth be with you” is a saying I’ve seen for as long as I’ve been on the internet, with some fans speculating that was when we were going to get a trailer for The Rise of Skywalker, something that turned out not to be the case. Despite this, May the fourth has always been special for Star Wars fans, and a good reminder of how much joy this franchise brings, not only to the hardcore fans but even to non-fans, who often get in on the fun.

To now have the California Legislature make May the fourth official while also acknowledging all the good (particularly employment opportunities) Star Wars – and, by extension, Disney – have done is a huge boon for the mega-corporation. No, at first blush this may not seem like a big deal, but for the people who live in California, it’s massive. For example, I remember how when Hawaii Five-0 started, a lot of people in Hawaii were excited that the crew who worked on Lost would have an opportunity for more work (not to mention helping tourism), something that the Tom Selleck iteration of Magnum P.I. facilitated after the original Five-0 ended. With both states enjoying the rise of employment, the idea of paying tribute to these benefactors makes total sense and is great public relations for all involved.

Are you excited about this news or do you believe the Force is not with this idea? Let us know in the comments and as always, may the fourth be with you!
