New Alien Movie From Fede Alvarez Ramps Up

The Aliens are back…again. Deadline exclusively reports that Fede Alvarez’s new Alien movie is gaining traction at 20th Century Studios (which, as with about 80% of movie studios nowadays, means Disney), and Cailee Spaeny is in talks to play the lead role. Alvarez is the writer of the Evil Dead remake (or whatever it was), Don’t Breathe, and this year’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre; the new Alien film will be his directorial debut. Spaeny has appeared in Pacific Rim: Uprising, Bad Times at the El Royale, and Vice, as well as the HBO miniseries Mayor of Easttown. The plot of the movie is unknown, but is said to involve the Aliens (or Xenomorphs, if we’re going to split hairs) attacking humans – a huge departure for the franchise, he said sarcastically. But it excited 20th Century Studios enough for them to fast-track the film, which is expected to start shooting early in 2023.
This doesn’t excite me nearly as much as it seems to have excited the studio. I haven’t seen anything Fede Alvarez has been involved in, and while I’ve seen Bad Time at the El Royale (which I was convinced I’d hate for the first ten or fifteen minutes but ended up liking very much as it played out) and Mayor of Easttown (which I thought was okay), I can’t recall who Cailee Spaeny played in either one or whether I liked her performances. But they’re not the issue; I’m tired of the Alien franchise. There doesn’t seem to be much more you can do with it, and I don’t like the idea of making more of them without Ripley (the alternative to which is not overly feasible, as Sigourney Weaver is in her 70s now). I know Hollywood is determined to milk every half-dead cow they’ve got and then go to work on the corpses’ udders, but it’s not all that tantalizing a prospect to me. It’ll happen, though, so I guess we can all… well, I won’t say “hope,” but we can prepare ourselves.
