New Art for Canceled Batman Game “Project Sabbath” Leaked

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League wasn’t always a given. Before the game that cost Warner Bros. $200 million and dragged Sweet Baby Inc. and the DEI consulting racket into the light of day, Warner Bros. Games was developing another Batman: Arkham game as a follow-up to Batman: Arkham Knight, the last in the series before Harley Quinn put a bullet in its head (although it looks like it might get better soon). Little was known about this other potential Arkham game until yesterday, when video game character artist Rodrigue Pralier released some of his concept art for the game, which was being called “Project Sabbath.” Project Sabbath – which was presumably just a placeholder until they decided on the noun that would follow “Arkham” – would center on Damian Wayne as a new Batman (insert teeth gritting) that looked like the one from Batman Beyond, while an older Bruce Wayne would play a role in the story, as would an older Killer Croc and the Huntress, art for whom Pralier also released. You can see the Project Sabbath concept art below, courtesy of X account Batman Arkham Videos:

The concept for Project Sabbath was set up at the end of Arkham Knight, where Bruce Wayne appears to die with Alfred in an explosion at Wayne Manor after being outed as Batman by the Scarecrow, after which a new Batman-like figure that looks like a demonic bat is seen protecting the streets of Gotham City, preventing a mugging eerily similar to the one that killed Bruce’s parents. If you’ve never played the game, you can see the ending in the video below:

It was pretty much a given that Bruce had staged his death and that the story – if it were to continue – would pick up with this new Bat-thing and probably involve the return of the real Batman. In fact, a different artist, Goran Bukvic, released some images from Project Sabbath in 2021, these ones featuring the Damian Wayne imposter and an older, bearded Bruce Wayne back in action as Batman (looking very Dark Knight Returns-ish), plus a version of the Batcycle, which you can see below via X account The Arkham Channel:

Much like the third Arkham game, Batman: Arkham Origins, Project Sabbath was to be developed not by Rocksteady Studios, which created the Arkham series, but by Warner Bros. Games Montréal. During the game’s development, Warner Bros. changed it from a direct follow-up to the Arkham games to Gotham Knights, an unconnected game starring the Bat-Family, despite taking place after the death of Batman. Why they did this is anyone’s guess; it makes little sense to me, especially considering Arkham Knight’s ending leaves Warner Bros. with an easy way to get out of killing off Batman. It seems like an even worse idea considering that Gotham Knights underperformed – as does jumping back into the Arkham universe with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a game that tore down everything those four awesome (to varying degrees) games built and had Harley Quinn insult and kill Batman. The studio had to desperately undo all their idiotic meddling via some cheap-looking comic book, and since then, a new VR Arkham game was released for the Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S called Batman: Arkham Shadow. There are also plans for another Batman game at Warner Bros. Games, though whether it’s a new entry in the Batman: Arkham series or something unconnected is unknown. I sincerely doubt this will be Project Sabbath, though; I think Warner Bros. will play it as safe as possible with their next Batman outing, which means no Damian Wayne and no cavalcade of glorified sidekicks as the leads. This will be Bruce Wayne as Batman, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Joker is the villain because they’ll want it to hit every possible button it can. And I don’t mind, as long as it’s a good game, preferably a great one, and a return to form that’s worthy of the Arkham series, even if it’s not part of it.
