New Bond Film Gets Title: No Time to Die

We already knew the number, but now we know the name. Earlier today via the official James Bond Twitter account, EON Productions announced that the title of the next 007 film, which they’d been calling Bond 25, is No Time to Die. No more reveals were made, but honestly, the title is exciting enough, as it’s further assurance that a new James Bond movie is actually on the way. The follow-up to 2015’s SPECTRE, No Time to Die will feature Daniel Craig in his final performance as the world’s most famous spy, with Ralph Fiennes, Ben Wishaw, Naomie Harris, and Rory Kinnear as his MI6 cohorts, M, Q, Moneypenny, and Bill Tanner, respectively. Also returning are Jeffrey Wright as Bond’s CIA buddy, Felix Leiter; Léa Seydoux as Bond’s most recent paramour, Madeleine Swann; and – if rumors are correct – Christoph Waltz clawing his way back as Bond’s archenemy, Ernst Stavro Blofeld. New additions are Rami Malek as the as-yet-unnamed villain, Ana de Armas as new Bond Girl Paloma, and Lashana Lynch as interim-007 Nomi. Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, No Time to Die will open in the US on April 8, 2020, and in the UK on April 3, 2020.

I find the title reveal more satisfying than that short bit of footage EON released a couple of months ago. That was just a “seriously, this movie is being made” throwaway; this is the title, always a matter of much speculation among Bond fans. With all of the titles of Ian Fleming’s books and most of this short stories already used (“The Property of a Lady,” “Risico,” and “The Hilderbrand Rarity” are still up for grabs; the last one received a nod in SPECTRE), the filmmakers have had to get creative since The Living Daylights. No Time to Die is a good choice, reminiscent of the play-on-a-phrase formula of which Fleming was fond (Live and Let Die, “From a View to a Kill”), and in keeping with some of Brosnan’s films, like Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day. It also seems like it will be applicable to the storyline; after retiring at the end of the last movie, maybe Bond will realize that, with a new threat emerging (and, perhaps, an old one resurfacing as well), this is no time to let his former life die, and that the world needs the real 007. I certainly like it better than Skyfall; the movie is great, but that title is a snoozer. I don’t imagine there’s a whole lot left to reveal about No Time to Die, and that’s fine with me; I’d rather just walk into the theater knowing James Bond is back.
