New G.I. Joe Film in the Works

Deadline reports that work on the next G.I. Joe film is already underway. Writers Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, the team behind the Kristen Stewart-starring Seberg, are in negotiations to pen the script. The film, while not being a traditional sequel, will build on the October 23rd Henry Golding-fronted Snake Eyes spinoff that is being directed by Rob Schwentke and on which Shrapnel and Waterhouse did uncredited work.

G.I. Joe Seberg Writers

In the wake of Snake Eyes’ new subtitle, G.I. Joe Origins, I can’t say I’m surprised by this. It’s been over seven years since G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and since Paramount needs viable franchise I.P., it makes sense the studio would be bullish on another film so soon. This gives the entire Snake Eyes production a vote of confidence that they are on the right track. In addition, it’s nice to see that the studio is trying to bring a unified vision to the franchise, much like they have done in recent years with their Mission: Impossible series with Chris McQuarrie, something that more or less wasn’t handled particularly well with the previous two films. I can’t wait to see what characters they’ll bring into the franchise next as Henry Golding hopefully remains the anchor of the brand going forward.

Are you excited that the G.I. Joe franchise is back on track, or are you done with this series? What characters do you think they’ll bring in to face Snake Eyes in the new film? If Kristen Stewart joins her Seberg writers, will she be the new Scarlett? Let us know in the comments and stay safe and healthy as Geeks + Gamers continues to bring you more T.V. and movie news!
