Peacemaker Season 2 Trailer Immerses Itself in the DCU

Superman arrives in theaters in a couple of months to bring James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU to the big screen, but the newly developing universe is also chugging along on HBO. The first season of the animated series Creature Commandos has come and gone, and today, Warner Bros. released a Peacemaker season 2 trailer. The second season of the spinoff series stars John Cena as the title character, a role he originated in showrunner James Gunn’s film The Suicide Squad, finds Peacemaker recovered after being almost killed at the end of the movie and joining a top secret group in ARGUS – well, another top secret group in ARGUS – and making friends with some other wayward souls in typical James Gunn fashion. Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, Dee Bradley Baker, and (as if there were any doubt) Jennifer Holland round out Peacemaker’s team. As it arrives on HBO on August 21, 2025, Peacemaker season 2 will pick up where Superman leaves off, at least in terms of unfurling the DCU, with several characters from the upcoming film making appearances in the trailer, which you can see below:

Admittedly, I still haven’t seen season 1 of Peacemaker; I didn’t like The Suicide Squad, and I didn’t care for John Cena’s performance in it, so I had no interest in watching him return as the character for a whole TV show. But now, the series is going to be integral to the DCU – or parts of it, anyway; like everyone who isn’t James Gunn, I have no idea what’s going on with the DCU – so I guess I’ll have to dive in sooner or later. I hope this is better than Creature Commandos, though; I made it through two episodes of that trash and gave up. But based on the Peacemaker season 2 trailer, I may have to stick it out because it sounds like certain things happened that I’ll need to know. For example, Rick Flagg Sr. is now the head of ARGUS, somehow; how does that work if Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller is supposed to be a DCU mainstay? Regardless, this show is now required viewing, which confuses the DCEU/DCU continuity quite a bit, so I’ll check out the first season soon and watch this when it premieres the month after Superman. I hope it’s better than I fear it may be.

Peacemaker season 2 trailer, Peacemaker season 2, Peacemaker

And honestly, the Peacemaker season 2 trailer has some things I like a lot. The very presence of Saturday Night Live legend Tim Meadows is a plus, and it looks like this show will use him a lot better than The Mandalorian did. His scene with that special ops squad made me laugh, and it’s an indication that this show may be taking a baseball bat to wokeness; the scene where a therapist tells Jennifer Holland she has “toxic masculinity” may be another, although that could go either way. This would be a massive relief after the obnoxiously woke Creature Commandos, which made the bad guys misogynistic “incels” who hate female superheroes but also simp for an Amazonian goddess. I also like the idea of Rick Flagg Sr. going after Peacemaker in revenge for the death of his son in The Suicide Squad. Not only is it a demonstration of consequences in this universe, but it addresses the fact that we’re supposed to somehow be okay with Peacemaker after he killed Rick Flagg Jr. (Although maybe the first season dealt with this; I’ll know soon.) Frank Grillo is exactly the kind of guy you want to put a musclebound hero like Peacemaker up against because he can credibly play a tough guy. And while that first scene with some of the characters from Superman was kind of dumb (Sean Gunn is supposed to be Maxwell Lord, which suggests this character will be a joke in the DCU), it’s always great to see Nathan Fillion, and I’m glad his Guy Gardner will make more appearances in this universe. There’s enough good stuff in the trailer to make me more interested than I thought I’d be in a show about Peacemaker.
