2025 is about half over (already!), and that means a new season of Reacher is about to go into production. The Amazon Prime series, based on Lee Child’s novels, follows a former MP named Jack Reacher who wanders the country with nothing but the clothes on his back, getting into adventures and helping good people by pulverizing evil ones. Season 3 of Reacher ended in March, and season 4 is scheduled to film over the summer, meaning it will probably air in the same time frame as season 3 next year, so it’s no surprise that details are finally being revealed. Yesterday, the show’s star, Alan Ritchson, posted an image on his Instagram account of where he’s holding a copy of Child’s thirteenth Jack Reacher book, Gone Tomorrow, in one hand and four fingers of his other hand, with a caption saying that Reacher season 4 will be based on Gone Tomorrow. Today, Deadline revealed the main cast for season 4 outside of Ritchson, the only returning character (unless Maria Sten’s Neagley pops up again), as well as the characters they’ll be playing. Jay Baruchel will play a “small-town policeman;” Sydelle Noel and Kevin Corrigan will play detectives from Philadelphia; Agnez Mo will play an Indonesian woman looking for her biological father, with Anggun as her mother; Kevin Weisman will be a reporter investigating “a suspected CIA Black Site;” Marc Blucas will play a senator, with Kathleen Robertson as his wife.

That’s a neat cast; I don’t recognize all of the names, but some will ring a bell to people who grew up in the 90s and early 2000s. To me, Kevin Weisman will always be Marshall from Alias, who was the show’s version of Q, coming up with cool gadgets for Jennifer Garner to use in the field, but he was also part of an epic scene in Clerks II. Marc Blucas was on Buffy the Vampire Slayer for a while as everyone’s least favorite of Buffy’s boyfriends, Riley; he was also in the excellent Knight and Day with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, though only for one or two scenes, and the S. Craig Zahler masterpiece Brawl in Cell Block 99. Kathleen Robertson was the gorgeous new addition to the cast in Scary Movie 2. Kevin Corrigan has been in more movies than you can name, like Goodfellas, The Departed, True Romance, Pineapple Express, Bad Boys, Billy Bathgate, and American Gangster, to name a few. Jay Baruchel turns up a lot as well, with Million Dollar Baby, Tropic Thunder, This is the End, and the underrated TV series Undeclared on his résumé; he also voiced the lead role in the How to Train Your Dragon films. I’m not familiar with the others, but I’ve never had a problem with Reacher’s casting, so I’m happy to see how these actors and their characters fit into season 4. I suspect Baruchel’s cop will be played up as a stark physical contrast to the towering Reacher, and I’ll be severely disappointed if Reacher doesn’t knock out Blucas at some point. (I’m sure he’s a nice fellow, but God, I hated Riley.)
As for the plot, Gone Tomorrow isn’t one of the three Reacher books I’ve read, so I had to look it up. The description on Amazon is vague (which isn’t a bad thing), but it seems to take Reacher to New York City, where he helps a woman with a “big secret” and gets involved in a “shadow war.” That’s more than enough to get me interested, although really, I just need to hear that Reacher is coming back. I follow very few shows week-to-week anymore, but Reacher is a pleasure to watch because it’s so much fun, an entertaining throwback to action series and movies that delivered the goods without apologizing for themselves or their audience. I’m glad a show like this exists today, and that it’s successful enough to keep getting renewed, and unlike, say… off the top of my head… Game of Thrones, there is plenty of source material to fuel over a decade of new seasons. Reacher has quickly become an old reliable, something you can mostly count on to be familiar enough so you know you’ll enjoy it while still taking you on a twisty journey with mysteries and surprises. Season 3 was a step down from the previous two, but I’m nowhere close to asking for the check yet, and I can’t wait to see Jack Reacher stomp across my TV again.
