Maybe Scarlett Johansson sees her conscious uncoupling from Disney as an opportunity. An exclusive by The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the Black Widow star has been cast in Wes Anderson’s currently filming movie, which has no official title yet. Johansson joins Tom Hanks and Margot Robbie, as well as a bunch of Anderson’s regular actors, including Adrian Brody, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, and Tilda Swinton. The film, which is shooting in Spain right now, is scheduled to premiere in 2022. Anderson’s next release will be The French Dispatch, about a French outpost for an American newspaper inspired by The New Yorker. The French Dispatch was moved around the release schedule due to lockdowns but will hit theaters on October 22, 2021, after premiering at the New York Film Festival in September. Johansson, who is currently suing Disney for breaching their Black Widow contract with her, appeared in Wes Anderson’s animated film Isle of Dogs; this will be their first live-action collaboration.

If this is where Scarlett Johansson’s career is heading after the Black Widow dustup with Disney, I’m all for it. While she’s become best known for playing Marvel’s sexiest superspy over the past decade, Johansson is a phenomenal actress who has consistently delivered knock-out performances in smaller dramas and comedies over the years. She’s appeared in a few Woody Allen movies and has been sensational in every one of them (everyone hates Scoop for some reason, but I think it’s hilarious). And this doesn’t necessarily mean she’s stepping away from blockbusters; she made several smaller films in-between Marvel movies, like Under the Skin, Her, and the Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar! But now would be the perfect time to focus more on these types of projects, ones where she doesn’t have massive back-end contracts and can test her range a little better while her legal dispute moves through the courts. As for Wes Anderson, I usually love his movies, though when they’re bad, they’re excruciating. But I look forward to each new one, and I think Johansson will be a great fit for his world; she can be arch and subdued, funny and human – check out the three Allen flicks to see her range, because she’s wildly different in every single one and equally good in all of them. And who wouldn’t want to see her shot in that gorgeous cinematography that makes Anderson’s films instantly identifiable?
