Sony Finally Dates He-Man Movie

Sony is about to have the power. According to Deadline, they staked out a March 5, 2021 release for the long-gestating Holloway/Marcum-scripted Hasbro remake of Masters of the Universe starring Noah Centineo as He-Man. This is a project I’ve followed for a long time, going back to The Jungle Book screenwriter Justin Marks’ adaptation entitled Greyskull, as well as it’s alleged progenitor, a treatment written by Collider’s Mark Reilly and Kristian Harloff.

Over the years, I’ve wondered if this property would ever be able to escape the legacy of the 1987 Cannon adaptation starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as his nemesis Skeletor. That film is one of my favorite cheesy 80’s movies, yet there’s no denying today’s special effects would better serve the IP and, as Mr. Harloff has often stated, presented as a Lord of the Rings meets Star Wars narrative. When Masters of the Universe was initially dated for a December 2019 release (before Star Wars took over the date when JJ Abrams snatched back the reins of the sequel trilogy), I was excited to know that December would retain its status as a premier destination for event pictures. But with the growing trend of March being a great launch pad for a variety of genre pictures (see last year’s offerings, Tomb Raider and, to a larger extent, Ready Player One), it would make sense to give He-Man the same opportunity. My only question now is, who will play Skeletor? While a part of me would love to see Langella return given his passion for the role, I have a feeling Stephen Lang would be a better bet, as he’s done a great job of giving us fantastic scenery-chewing villains since Avatar. Whatever happens, I’m sure the Rhee brothers will do right by this iconic villain.
