There are plenty of questions surrounding Avengers: Doomsday, the next Marvel event film from the Russo Brothers – including whether or not it will be the event Marvel needs it to be – and one of the biggest is what Doctor Doom will look like. After dispensing with their new big villain, Kang the Conqueror, following the legal troubles of actor Jonathan Majors (though as more time goes on, I wonder if they used that as an excuse to ditch a character they had completely botched), Marvel turned to perhaps the greatest villain in their stable to take his place for the remainder of what they’re calling The Multiverse Saga. At last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, they announced that Robert Downey Jr. would return to portray Doom, a questionable (to say the least) move that seemed more desperate than inspired – mostly because it was the former and was in no way the latter. Then, that interminable casting announcement aired, and we learned much of the main cast, though Kevin Feige says more names are on the way. And now, a supposedly leaked photo is making the rounds, with some claiming it’s what Doctor Doom will look like in the film. Here it is, courtesy of WorldClassBullshitters, and again, take this with a grain of salt:

This has to be fake, right? For the love of God, this has to be fake, right? I know Marvel sucks right now, imagination and creativity have largely left the building, and the string of mostly bad movies and shows leading up to Doomsday doesn’t inspire confidence in their ability to right their ship, but still… this has to be fake, right? I think it probably is, and it had better be because that design is awful. It looks like a Thor costume with Iron Man’s arc reactor in the chest, and it has the dullest, flattest colors they could have possibly chosen. It’s so boring it listens to three-hour lectures about salt erosion in its downtime. The image is fuzzy, but I think the cape is green, and that’s the only thing that’s even remotely similar to Doctor Doom’s outfit about it. Downey has long, gray hair and a big beard covering his face, and I had this weird thought that maybe that’s supposed to be their version of Doom’s infamous mask, sort of like how Catwoman’s sunglasses formed her cat ears in The Dark Knight Rises only way lamer. It could be their way of “having the mask” while showing their big movie star’s face throughout the film. But all kidding aside, I don’t think this is real; as bad as Marvel has gotten, they’re not this bad. Right?
Honestly, the only thing giving me pause right now is that, as far as I can tell, no one from Marvel has denied this yet, and it’s the sort of thing they have to deny right away. They’re in such a bad place right now that they need to assure their fans that this is a hoax immediately, and while I still think it probably is, that they’re not doing this is unnerving. They have an opportunity to deliver the Doctor Doom fans have always wanted to see in a movie, and while they’ve already shot themselves in the foot by casting Robert Downey Jr., rushing Doom’s introduction, and forcing him into someone else’s story as a placeholder, they could at least get the look right. Doctor Doom’s costume is iconic, so much so that it was one of the inspirations for Darth Vader’s design. All you have to do is replicate it as closely as humanly possible, and you’re golden. Like what we saw in that leaked artwork; that was perfect. So, why do a lot of people think this might be real? Because for the past few years, Marvel has made a habit of fumbling surefire wins like this. Look at Daredevil: Born Again; all they had to do was hire one of the creative teams from the Netflix show and let them continue the story, but instead, they hired the guys behind Covert Affairs to turn it into a comedy without Foggy or Karen. They’re effectively doubling the budgets of their movies due to massive reshoots because they can’t get anything right the first time anymore (not that their fourth, fifth, or sixth attempts are much better). Ultimately, I think this Doctor Doom image is probably fake, but I wouldn’t be willing to put money on it.
