Taika Watti to Write and Direct Thor 4

It looks like New Doug is about to make his way back to the big screen. In a somewhat surprising turn of events, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Taika Waititi has signed on to write and direct Thor 4 as his next film following WWII piece Jojo Rabbit, taking over scripting duties from Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle, and Thor franchise stalwart Chris Yost. Chris Hemsworth is reprising the titular role. While this news is exciting, an unfortunate casualty of this deal is WB’s Akira, which had a release date of May 21, 2021. Evidently, aside from various production issues, the start dates were too close together, and the God of Thunder’s next solo outing won out. Warner Bros. is optimistic that the What We do in the Shadows director will return to the beleaguered anime adaptation once his commitments to the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been completed.

Additionally, Deadline is reporting that his Flash Gordon animated film has also been put on hold, though sources stressed it was only for two weeks. Given Waititi’s ambiguous status with the project, this shouldn’t come as much of a shock. Throughout his tenure in the MCU, Thor was always the hero that, until Ragnarok, never seemed to get a fair shake. His third film rejuvenated the character and made a case for why he should remain in play for the foreseeable future with Waititi mentioning how he would love to direct “Thor: Ragnarok 2” throughout the press tour for Hemsworth’s third solo adventure as Thor. Given how Avengers: Endgame left our hero, the sky seems to be the limit for where he can go next, and I can’t wait to see what Waititi brings us once Thor 4 is released.

Are you excited that Waititi is bringing the “Lord of Thunder” back to the big screen or has the sun gotten real low on this franchise? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned to Geek + Gamers for more updates on the MCU!
