The Equalizer 3 Trailer Counts Down to Action

Batman and Geralt may be getting all the attention today, but another unstoppable avenger has been unleashed alongside them. Sony Pictures Entertainment has released a red band trailer for The Equalizer 3, its upcoming action sequel. This installment – billed as “the final chapter” – finds Robert McCall, former Marine and intelligence agent, retired in Italy and finally at peace… until he watches the Mafia torment his new friends and sets his watch once again. Denzel Washington returns as McCall, joined this time by Dakota Fanning, David Denman, Sonia Ammar, and Remo Girone. Antoine Fuqua is back to direct, with Richard Wenk once again writing the script. The Equalizer 3 will hit theaters on September 1, 2023, and you can see the red band (as in not safe for work) trailer below:

This looks incredible! I love the first two Equalizer movies; they’re fun, brutal, immensely satisfying action films with a likable hero played perfectly by Denzel Washington. The action is great, but I also appreciate the implied kills, such as when the first movie’s villain – a rare good modern baddie played by Marton Csokas – hires an assassin to take out Denzel, then the guy leaves to use the restroom, and in a few moments, Denzel arrives and gives the hitman’s bloody sunglasses to Csokas. There are lots of instances like that, and they’re all cool, but they’re never overused to the extent that you crave some real action. And McCall is such an effective hero because he honestly wants to help people; his brutality is aimed at protecting the innocent, and even outside of killing bad guys, he tries to improve the lives of those around him. The Equalizer 3 has a good set-up, with McCall finally finding peace in Italy, only to have another evil force threaten it. This feels like a threat escalation; McCall is now taking on the Mafia on its home turf, like he’s descending into Hell to fight the Devil. It’s a shame they’re definitively calling this the last one, but I get it; Denzel is pushing 70 now, and despite how iconic he is as a star, he’s probably only got so many more movies like this in him. So be it; I’m excited to see McCall go out on a high note, and these movies haven’t let me down yet.
