The Flash and Superman & Lois Renewed

The fight never ends for a true hero – at least not this TV season. The CW network has renewed The Flash and Superman & Lois, two of its remaining Arrowverse series (and easily its best ones – to be fair, I’ve yet to subject myself to Batwoman outside of its entry in the abysmally bad “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover, but I’m comfortable making a guess on this one), along with several other shows. The other series coming back for another season are Walker, Riverdale, Nancy Drew, All American, and Kung Fu. As Deadline notes, the CW is known for giving early renewals to its entire slate, but as the network is up for sale, it’s probably leaving certain decisions to its impending new owner, whoever that may be. This next season will be the ninth for The Flash, making it the longest-running series in the Arrowverse; whether that will be it for the TV adventures of the Fastest Man Alive hasn’t been disclosed yet.

This is expected, but still welcome. Before season 8 started, I was ready for The Flash to call it a day, but it’s been surprisingly strong this year. Aside from one lousy episode, the show has rediscovered what makes it work so well (minus Cisco, but that’s not their fault) and has explored its classic themes without rehashing old plotlines. The opening “Armageddon” miniseries was a real shot in the arm, easily eclipsing the last few mega-crossovers and giving Barry a compelling nemesis who may turn up again. Let’s hope it keeps its momentum for as long as it stays running. As for Superman & Lois, it’s young compared to most of the other shows, but it found its footing immediately, presenting for the first time in what seems like forever a Superman who actually feels like Superman, as well as a conviction and proud earnestness befitting its hero. I don’t know what’s in store for the CW after it sells, but I’m glad these two shows will be helping to anchor it through its transition.

Are you glad (if not surprised) that The Flash and Superman & Lois have been renewed? Do you think this season will be it for The Flash? Is Batwoman a shoo-in for the next open timeslot? Let us know in the comments, and stay tuned to Geeks + Gamers for more TV news!
