The Irishman Trailer Arrives Online

The Irishman is Martin Scorcese’s upcoming Netflix movie based on the book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt. The first full trailer for the highly anticipated film is framed by a phone call set up by Joe Pesci’s (in his return to acting after nearly a decade) Russel Bufalino between Robert DeNiro’s Frank Sheehan and Al Pacino’s Jimmy Hoffa. As they exchange pleasantries, the trailer intercuts with glimpses of Sheehan through the years, and we even get a look at Harvey Keitel’s Angelo Bruno. As the trailer climaxes, we see Bufalino tell Hoffa how he thinks someone might be having trouble expressing gratitude. Given the fact that this is a gangster movie, there’s only one answer to that, as we see Sheehan throw his target to the ground and fire.

The final shot cuts back to the phone call with a younger Robert DeNiro telling Hoffa that he is available for whatever is needed and Bufalino joking about how Hoffa’s a talker. While it may be predictable in some places, I really like this trailer. It exemplifies what these icons have done best for the last forty years. I, for one, can’t wait to see what they bought us this time, especially in light of all the new technology they used throughout the production. If this trailer is any indication, The Irishman looks fantastic. While this may have been a major sticking point for many of the studios who turned this gangster epic down, I think it was a mistake. This trailer serves as a great reminder of what can be done when you put your faith in a legendary filmmaker’s vision.
