Tom Holland Isn’t Done with Spider-Man Yet

Tom Holland is going to be sticking to walls for some time. In an interview with Fandango to celebrate “Spider Monday” – which is what the site called Cyber Monday to indicate that tickets for Spider-Man: No Way Home went on sale – producer Amy Pascal revealed that Sony and Marvel Studios will be making more Spider-Man movies together and that Tom Holland will continue to play Peter Parker. The rest of the interview is fluffier than a pillow made of cotton candy (how does someone manage to give non-answers to questions as softball as these?), but the promise of more collaborations between Sony and Marvel/Disney is a big deal, especially in light of the doubt Holland threw on the subject a month ago.

This is what I assumed would happen. Tom Holland’s Spidey is well-liked, as can be seen from the day-one ticket sales for No Way Home. Part of it is the character’s general popularity, but recall that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed, indicating that Spider-Man movies aren’t bulletproof if audiences don’t care for the particular interpretation on tap. (It also puts those less-than-stellar performances for the year’s MCU output into perspective.) The MCU’s version of Marvel’s flagship hero has his detractors – and, now that I see what they’re doing with No Way Home, I’ve lost some of my goodwill for it – but most people love it. That being the case, Sony and Marvel would be crazy to call their series quits now. Marvel’s ground is growing shakier with each release, and none of the new (to the movies) heroes are catching on; they need Spider-Man. Besides which, the idea when they cast a younger star and set the early films in Peter’s high school years was to follow the character with one actor for as long as they could, into adulthood. Pascal indicates that this passage will be complete in No Way Home, so dropping the series now would have felt like a gyp. Pascal’s comments suggest that the other Spidey-adjacent movies – Venom, Morbius, that stupid Black Cat/Silver Sable thing they keep threatening to unleash – aren’t really going to tie into the main Spider-Man films, but given some of the moves they’re reportedly making, that’s hard to believe. Maybe they’ll just appeal to the multiverse to answer any of those questions; kind of like saying, “A wizard did it.”

Are you glad Tom Holland will continue playing Spider-Man? Where would you like the next leg of the series to take Peter Parker? Was letting Marisa Tomei age into the Aunt May role part of the plan all along? Let us know in the comments and stick around Geeks + Gamers for more movie news!
