Tom King Joins New Gods

Tom King is going from Batman to Big Barda. Deadline reports that the controversial Batman comic book writer has signed on to co-write the script for the New Gods movie with Ava DuVernay. While I’ve never been well-versed in the New Gods, I’ve been intrigued since this project was announced, and was extremely optimistic about the Selma director taking the helm, despite the misfire that was A Wrinkle in Time. That being said, I’m not sure bringing Tom King onto this film is a good idea. DC is currently on a creative upswing, so the notion that they would court controversy by hiring King is a bit disconcerting.

Tom King, Batman

Don’t get me wrong; I think he deserves a chance to reach a wider audience, much in the same way current Superman writer Brian Michael Bendis signed on to write a Kitty Pryde movie last year. But this doesn’t seem like the most prudent time for that. I’d much rather he focus on finishing his Batman run on a high note and moving on to the announced Batman and Catwoman series. I believe that King can be a good addition to the DC Extended Universe under the right auspices, but with the rumors of his story arc for Batman being turned down by the Warner Bros. higher-ups, I can’t imagine that these are it. However, like most Hollywood productions, there’s no guarantee that King will be a part of the production all the way through (like, for example, author Christopher Golden’s involvement with the recent Hellboy reboot), so it would be foolhardy to assume with any degree of certainty that his fingerprint will be on the Jack Kirby-created characters when the film finally hits theaters down the road.
