This is something that has more or less flown under the radar because of all the recent events going on, but might be worth for consideration/debate amongst the anglosphere (outside of the USA). In a nutshell, it’s an international agreement between the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada for closer ties in regards to trade and travel.
I personally have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I got involved in politics for a few years because I was frustrated at how Theresa May had jeopardized Brexit in 2017 and was determined to see that my vote to leave wouldn’t go to waste. The EU was a nightmarish bureaucracy that would only get worse, so I do feel a bit ambivalent about leaving one international organization only to join up with potentially another.
On the other hand, unlike with European countries, all four countries share the same heritage, language, system of government and head of state as part of the former English commonwealth, so there’s greater potential for better co-operation in shared interest and less friction over disputes. So long as each country still maintains their own sovereignty, there are undoubtedly benefits to it. And with countries like China and Iran getting more aggressive on the world stage, it may be a necessity. A CANZUK alliance could be an effective world power and valuable ally to the USA.
