First let me clarify the term Easter egg for movies so that everyone is on the same page. An Easter egg is something thrown into a movie or hidden item placed in a movie, television show, or otherwise visual media for close watchers. For example: actual Easter eggs hidden in the movie Rocky Picture Horror show like the one on Frank N. Furter’s throne or every scene in Ready Player 1.

On the flip side you have a homage. This is when a movie pays tribute or respect towards another film. For example: ET sees someone in a Yoda costume and tries to say hello or when people do the Bruce Lee “come get some” hand wave thing.

So do Easter Eggs add to the movie or do they distract from the fantasy? Are movies companies supersaturating the market, like in the case of Pixlar or Ready Player 1?

I personally think they are overdone to the point it’s distracting. I keep hearing Mr. Plinkett’s voice in my head every time I see one:  “Heeeeey guys….remember when you saw XYZ in another movie? Guess what…it’s in my movie. I can be cool too!”

The way they are used now, it seems like a cheap marketing gimmick to generate free publicity.

I love easter eggs, both in movies and in chocolate 😁 For me they’re not distracting, as i’m not activly searching for them on my first watch of a movie, but if i do catch one on first watch it’s pretty cool and for me adds to the movie experiance, then by the 2nd, 3rd, 10th viewing i’m in full easter egg hunter mode 🐣

I don’t think Ready Player One can really count as the entire movie is basically one big easter egg with a plot that is built around finding an easter egg. Or at the very least, should be considered the exception.

I used to not mind Easter Eggs in movies as they were fun little things to notice. In the Back to the Future series, Easter Eggs help show how Marty’s actions change the course of history; such as the Twin Pines Mall sign changing to Lone Pine Mall. Or when they were homages to producers or directors; again Back to the Future 2 has the Jaws 19 movie reference but there is also a copy of Jaws for the NES in the shop window where the sports almanac is.

My issue with Easter Eggs now stems from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It use to be that Easter Eggs were subtle and little nods but with the MCU, every website and YouTube channel comes out with an Easter Egg list whenever a big franchise movie comes out and everyone and their brother start combing through the trailers and still images, pretending their Sherlock Holmes and putting forth their speculations of what this item on the counter top means, or this line of dialogue or what the billboard sign 3 buildings behind the supporting actor is really hinting at.

I miss the days of movies like Last Action Hero which had a cardboard display of Stallone as The Terminator in T2 then in Demolition Man there is a reference to the President Schwarzenegger Library.
