Now, I’ve not actually played the latest expansion, but I have been playing ESO for a few years now (on both X1 and PC). I actually quite like it: It’s a standard-fare MMO, just with an Elder Scrolls theme. If you love Elder Scrolls gameplay I can understand why you’d be disappointed with it. But I’m pretty big into ES lore and I think ZeniMax have done a decent job telling new stories in Tamriel. Most quests in the base game are passable, and some of the “DLC” content has been the best ES content we’ve seen in years, compared to Bethesda Game Studio’s efforts with Skyrim (Orsinium was great and Clockwork City focused on the stranger parts of ES lore, not seen since Shivering Isles).

I’m currently taking a break after months of playing (I’ve done Elsweyr, which I thought was decent, but still haven’t played Dragonhold as of yet) but I thought I’d start a discussion thread for anyone else who may have played it (if you’re going to talk spoilers for Greymoor’s story, please mark as such).

I stopped while playing Summerset. I got tired of the bad side quest. I loved the Dark Brotherhood DLC. And Molag Bal was cool in the main story. The trailer for Greymoor looked woke with that huge woman. I still have to play Dawnguard in Skyrim so I’m just going to play that.

Dark Brotherhood was pretty great – Personally I kinda wish there was an alternative “good” path to the story, as my main is a “Lawful Good” Imperial, but that’s less of a criticism and more of a personal preference. It was still a good story.

I’ve seen criticisms of Molag Bal’s portrayal in this game, but honestly? I thought it was the best portrayal yet. Malcolm McDowell’s performance had a brilliant, authoritative tone to it. And as the Lord of Brutality, he’s not meant to be particularly subtle or morally grey. Sometimes “Dark Evil Overlord” characters work. What I’m particularly intrigued by is some of his dialogue after the Main Quest – It seems he’s not quite done with you yet and there’s an endgame in mind for the Vestige’s story, but I imagine that’s still years from now.

As for wokeness, I didn’t really detect that from the Greymoor trailer. Are you referring to Lyris Titanborn? She was in the game at launch and ‘warrior women’ archetypes aren’t really anything new. I do think there’s a bit of liberal bias from ZeniMax, but they do generally keep it out of the game and make it a rule not to talk about politics on their community. It’s not as though they’ve attacked fans that have disagreed with them and told them to get lost.
