This is kind of a mirror topic to another, but that one is about Star Wars. What could be a good way to breathe some life into Star Trek, or are there aspects of the ST universe you’d like for the story to focus on? After all, it’s been a while since ST had a big success.
One idea comes to my mind as a possible way of both putting some needed tension into the ST universe and developing the various races: a Federation civil war.
The Klingons finally get tired of being dictated to by the humans, and they break away from the Federation. A few others follow, and things get messy. The Federation does not lose power and control lightly, so they set about trying to bring the rebels back into the fold, by any means necessary. The Klingons decide to fight back in the dirtiest, but most effective, way possible–they infest earth with tribbles. Within weeks, almost all the planet’s food resources are devoured.
Maybe a silly idea, at least that last part, though I do think there is some story potential in putting the Federation itself to the test, and in other cultures deciding to not kowtow to the Federation’s codes; after all, why should human ideals and morals and ethics be the ones that dominate and control? Why should other alien races bend their knees to the Federation?
So, good idea, bad idea, misinformed idea? Any other ideas?
Hire people who are actual Trekkies. People who have a knowledge of it’s history and what FANS like/want.
Hire people based on talent, not check boxes.
Identity Politics/Agenda’s on the back burner. Story and Character’s FIRST!
Get rid of the flashy, fast moving garbage. Get back to the stuff like the first 6 movies had.
I would like an entire movie or series based on Klingons. NOT the shiny JJ Abbrams Klingons, the Worf Klingons.
Very good ideas all. Since the USA was founded, there has always been expansion and contraction between Federalism and Anti-Federalism. States rights vs. Federal and that is something that is done with planets as well, since there are always uprisings and bootlegging to try to get around imperial taxes and such. You see this today where the battles are between globalism and nationalism.
The tribbles idea is a good one, too, because in science, there used to be this idea of an “invasive species” that you were supposed to keep out of certain ecologies to maintain the natural balance. Some people would call humans an invasive species. Lately, there have been those “murder hornets.” Also, this was the reason why people were not supposed to transport fruit across state lines or import certain food items because of pests that might dwell within the food. The joke is that they allow illegal alien invaders from south of the border to come in by the millions, but your oranges and mangoes require strict inspection.
If you were selecting your all-star team, would you want quotas and handouts given or would you pick the winners that you knew were the best? This is something I struggle with as I do not know how to select writers or to do casting calls. I do have a theory on writers that I always wanted them to either have a military background or a clergy background as in religious service. The reason is the formal structure and the experience that these people have. Star Trek was meant to be a wild frontier pilgrimage or a Navy ship sailing in the stars, so I’d look for Navy grad writers or chaplain writers.
Last thing, but someone posted the best speeches of Pickard on this site. It was great. The characters on The Next Generation rivaled that of the original cast. To go with No. 1 and 2, which was Kirk and Spock, then you had Pickard and Riker. Instead of Scottie and Bones, you had the Klingon, the black with the visor and Data. I like Data, what a character. I also like that there were about 5 strong primary characters, and then, the secondary and tertiary characters.
Axanar!
It takes place IN Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek Universe.
And is create by Trekkies!
The CGI is awesome.
The costumes dead on!
The story, dialogue and actors are perfect for their roles.
So this story takes place in the federal/klingon war where Captain Garth made famous.
Just as ST:DS9 was about the Dominion War.
We can then have a series about the Orion War.
etc.
Erase all the Kelvin-timeline stuff and start over. Jump another 100+ years into the future. 25th or 26th century. The federation has explored most of the milky way galaxy and either assimilated or made alliances with all the races. The new Enterprise will be the first ship to explore another galaxy. It’s a long journey but advances in warp make it possible.
Why?
To seek out new life and civilizations.
@WatchParty Are you talking about like the episode “By Any Other Name” from season two?
Beings from the Andromeda galaxy who hijacked the Enterprise for the three-hundred year journey back.
Personally, I would rather explore more about the milky way were the now freed Borg space, and the races they had assimilated, including that of Guinan (Woopie Goldberg’s character from The Next Generation.)
Sure it can take in 100 years further in time after TNG (with trans-warp of the Borg).
HHmmm…. what class of ship would this be?
We already had the constitution class, then the galaxy class.
A Super-Cluster Star Ship? One that can separate into a cluster of ships or combine into one mega-ship.
A modular type of star ship perhaps.
@Legatus_Legionis I actually just saw the episode. It’s not what I’m thinking though. I think they would go to another galaxy.
I think the show just needs a clean break from everything it’s built up. The Borg are overdone. We’ve been to the delta quadrant.
My idea is they go to another galaxy and after finding nothing for a while stumble upon another Federation-like society. The Star Alliance. It’s far bigger than the Federation, maybe a 1,000 or more member worlds. It seems like a perfect match and a union is quickly established. In fact, maybe the Federation should be absorbed into The Star Alliance. But eventually something seems off. Despite so many different species, so much diversity they all seem so much alike. They read and quote the same stories, have zero disagreement about scientific theories, the same opinion of galactic history and so on. When the Federation joins they’re expected to fall in line.
The representative of The Star Alliance smiles and says “I know it’s a lot but don’t worry. It may take some time but you will be assimilated.”
I could go on. I’ve actually thought about this a lot.
Return to Roddenberry’s vision of a positive future where human society evolved to the point of working together as one to create a bright future for itself.
This dark, negative, and sad vision of the future with the most recent stuff is just garbage. It’s as if someone made a show or movie about the inside of the heart of a radical leftist.
