Personally, I still enjoy the Harry Potter books even as an adult. Obviously, they’re no Shakespeare, but I enjoyed the hidden magical world Rowling created as well as the characters which I can still relate to even today. I can still laugh at how innocent the characters were in the beginning, comparing how I was when I was younger. That sense of discovery and intrigue to the world around you is something I think we all need to remember. I can even relate to the characters as they grow up. Sure, the drama can be obnoxious, and Hermione’s obsession with house elves is even more so, but it still reminds me of some of my friends from school and how everything in their lives was so much more dramatic than it needed to be. Even though some of the plot lines in the later books look a bit like swiss cheese, I almost don’t care because of how much fun it is to spend time in Hogwarts and see people like Nevile or Draco evolve from how they used to be back in book one. It also helps to listen to the fantastic audiobooks especially at night when you want something familiar and easy to fall asleep to.
I started listening to Harry Potter when I was extremely young. My parents listened to the books first on cassettes and then gave them to me. Someone older getting into Harry Potter might not have the nostalgia to back up their reading experience, but I would still argue the coming-of-age themes and the war between good and evil are a timeless story that someone young and even some adults could still enjoy. Even if you’re really not into Harry Potter, you can at least accept these books are buried treasure compared to the most recent crap they call Young Adult. I’m mainly talking about people like Cassandra Clare or Sarah J. Maas where incest and sex scenes are rife.
