Julius Erving oddly left LeBron off his all-time NBA top 10 list because of role in superteams

In an interview with Chris Haynes, Erving said he wouldn’t put LeBron on his first two all-time, All-NBA teams…

    I agree.

In another article I found this:

During an appearance on ‘Posted Up with Chris Haynes’, the Hall of Famer was asked to put together his all-time NBA first and second teams.

    And whom are those players?

The first team from Dr. J featured Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, Bill Russell and Jerry West.

The second team included Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and Karl Malone.

And of that list, not only did he not put comrade James on it, but no player after 2005 made the list!

I have to agree with his lists.

What those 10 players did to grow the game none can dispute.

And the fact he did not include himself just adds credibility to his list, IMO.

I still think he did more than Malone, but that is my opinion.

I love watching old school nba tapes and documentaries. Those players were the real ones. Respect for Dr. J not being afraid of saying what he thinks.

Lebron is a great player, but he has many negative aspects, and he’s kinda of a bitch and no one likes to have a bitch as a teamate, let alone as a leader.

my 1st all time team would probably be something like this:

    Isiah Thomas
    Jordan
    Julius Erving
    Rodman
    Hakeem Olajuwon

and a 2nd one like this:

    CP3
    Kobe
    T-Mac
    Duncan
    Shaq

There are still names i couldnt fit in like Wilt Chamberlain, Jon Stockton, Iverson, Garnett, Nash, Magic, etc :)

Top 10 in no particular order.

      1 Michael Jordan
      2 Scotty Pippin
      3 Larry Bird
      4 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
      5 Dr. J
      6 Pistol Pete Maravich
      7 Magic
      8 Shaq
      9 Bill Russell

      10 Wilt Chamberlain

Did he say if he made the two lists based on eras? The first list looks like it’s from the 1960s and early 70s, and the second is maybe late 70s and in the 80s and maybe into the 90s, with Abdul-Jabbar being a kind of bridge between the two eras.

I’m wondering about that, because if it’s a general list, I’d probably put Tim Duncan ahead of Malone, but if’s it based on era, that might affect choices.

Good lists. LeBron was largely a construct and all know it. There were magazine coronations before he ever played a single game, along with endorsement deals. In Miami, they had to stack his team with good supporting players, or I doubt He would’ve been considered so good. Without Michael Jordan, I really don’t think any of his teammates would have done much. Magic had a lot of support. Larry Bird would have made any team much better. Stockton and Malone took on entire teams by themselves just using pick and roll. Put them with any other guys on that list, and they win titles. Their third option was Hornacek. Tim Duncan is a great mention. Hard to believe the championships because he was such a quiet type.

Oscar Robertson was Mr. Triple-Double. He was kind of the Lebron of his time. Very much alike in physical dimensions, those two.

I don’t think one’s political opinions should define how good they are at their jobs. After LeBron started flapping his lips more, a lot of people got super mad and went like ”ughhh you were never even a good player anyway 🙄🙄” which is just stupid

It’s hard to say how good anyone is today because there is so much rigging involved in everything. Again, Lebron got the spoils before he ever had to go to war. The league was determined to make him a winner. This accommodation was not made to past players. MJ had to earn his endorsements. Other players had to do many things in the league before they ever got on the cover of magazines. All of this was in reverse with this particular player.

I still think Erving’s list is dead correct.

All those players help BUILD up the league, and fan base, the revenue streams, etc.

The marxist court jester james has been doing everything to tear DOWN the game, alienate its fans, and made a mockery of sportsmanship.

      And Jordan is the GOAT!

      James is a simp.

Still has nothing to do with his level of skill. Just like in any other work, people should be ranked according to how well they do their job, and not let their gender, nationality, personal life, religion, political opinions etc. effect the results.

      Jordan is the GOAT!

people should be ranked according to how well they do their job

And that is exactly why james does NOT belong on a top-ten list of all-time NBA greats.

And that is why  james will NEVER be known as the goat.

He has not EARNED not DESERVES that title.

Explain why I am supposed to afford illiterate James that courtesy when he doesn’t reciprocate?

Jordan, was the heart of that team, it went with his ups and downs. He could win games just with his court presence, very view people could claim that, But he had unbelievable skills to go with that presence. Few in any sport can combine those two things, but he had a third attribute that is required to being on any list of Greatest. The ability to make people better players just for being around you, to make them turn it up to 11 and MJ did that for his team and those who played against him.

In sports only a very very few people had that ability, The Great One himself Wayne Gretsky, Michael Jordan, Joe Montana, Tom Brady, Babe Ruth. They all had the attributes.

Lebron, without a cast of extremely talents players around him would probably not even be in the discussion. But there is yet a final part of what makes a person in the list of Greatest. That is how they behave on and off court and Lebron FAILS MISERABLY, A truly Great player is also a representative of the SPORT and a roll model to many upcoming players and never alienates the fans.

David Robinson scored over 70 pts in a game before. No one talks about him.
