Movie Theaters will Die

In my younger days, I was a movie buff.  I must have went to hundreds of them.  Ticket prices ranged were generally $1, $2.50, $5.00, and $7.50.  It was so fun back in the 80s and 90s going to the theater.  But fast forward to today and it costs $30-$50 to go to the theater.  I think it is not worth it.

For that much money, I can buy 3 video games on Steam and get on average 8 to 12 weeks of fun out of those games instead of a 2-hour leftist woke movie in a theater.  I will give you an example.  I bought Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition on Steam for $2.99.  The video game was good.  The story pulled you in.  I played it for about a week. Pure fun.  Sure beat a movie.

What are your thoughts?  I personally think it isn’t good what is going on.  Soon, people will never leave their houses to socialize.  There are so few places to go to now.

In the last two decades, I have hardly went to the theaters to watch a movie.

For that price, I can wait a few months and PURCHASE the DVD, and then I can watch when I want, as often as I want, without worry of it being edited, people talking (to another or on the fucking phone), etc.

That last films I say in the theaters were Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003), the farce a-woke-ns (2015) and the last (straw) jedi (2017)

The price per ticket and food has not been affordable for a long time.

While I don’t like some of the types of people I encounter at a movie theater (you know which ones I’m talking about), I still enjoy the feeling of sitting in a theater with a giant screen and booming sound, watching a new blockbuster movie. Maybe that’s what theaters will become; spaces to watch tentpole films, while other films are sent to streaming

        To each their own

Me personaly, if 6 bucks is the minimum price for a movie ticket, it is also the maximum price i am willing to pay for a single DVD/BluRay

Where i am the retail price of DVDs is ridiculous, with DVDs costing up to 20 bucks and BluRays up to 30! So when the sales are on it’s bulk-buy time

I haven’t been to the movie theater since the vaccine passes were a thing. Now they finally lifted the mandates but still require you to wear a mask. So I’m not going till they lift the mask mandates too.

People said the Driven-in would never go away…. There are very very few of them left, also seeing movie theaters close.
A ticket is is running $12.05 for adult, Popcorn and a coke 9.00 so $22.00 including tax for 1 adult.

With so many companies going to online streaming I can have it on the high seas in 1080 within 3 hours of it opening. Why pay for me and my wife near $50.00 when I can have it free?

Even if they were nonstreaming, typically its on the net in 1080 within 12 hours so again why pay?

I am tired of screaming kids, Cell Phones going off  and overpriced concessions in the theaters. I can make my wife and I a Steak and taters with cornbread with some very good Bourbon for under $50.00 and Watch a movie on My 86” Home Theater system, and Pause it when I need a refill or to take a leak. So again why go to a theater?

And finally, what other than DUNE has Hollywood done in the last 5 years that is halfway decent without agenda driven politics…. Heck when was the last movie that was written well no agenda and took you away from reality for a couple hours to a true fantasy world?

Hey if movie theaters die…some rich handy man in someone’s neighborhood could always buy the biggest TV he could find and build a movie theater in his backyard and start a trend across the world where people go to this dude’s backyard to have some beers and watch movies there..it’d be good for community building….just saying.

@Blood.Ranger those used to be known as the Drive-In.  Besides, all DVD/blurays/streaming/etc have the disclaimer “for personal use ONLY”, not public consumption.

It’s still considered personal use if you let people watch it for free

Well inflation needs to be taken into consideration. Also the production cost is way higher these days, requiring ticket prices to be higher to cover expenses.

            farce a-woke-ns

what part of it was woke?

I’m fortunate that the cinema where I used to go wasn’t too bad. Very few incidents involving kids and other people happened there. Price was relatively decent too. Sadly, they closed two years ago because of COVID and we had to go back to a cinema that we haven’t been in over 20 years in order to see ‘The Batman’ a couple of weeks ago. We only stopped going to that one 20 years ago because my dad has very long legs and finds those seats very uncomfortable to sit in as a result! Other than that, again, prices were decent (it was £5 each for adults ticket wise) for tickets and food.

But yeah, it’s people and kids that want to put me off from going to cinemas these days. I cut kids slack because they’re kids and can’t help it but I do think parents should try and put them under control when they see 12a (our version of the PG-13 rating) rated films that go on for more than two hours. Not all of us over a certain age want to put up with other people’s kids whilst trying to enjoy a film that we’ve waited a while to see and are paying for!

Going to be honest. I don’t enjoy going to the theatre anymore. No, COVID has nothing to do with it.

It’s the godawful 20+mins of commercials and previews you have to set through. I am SICK of it. It is the reason I didn’t go see Batman, and I have been REALLY wanting to see it. I remember when The Force Awakens came out. There was preview after preview after commercial after preview. People in the audience were being very vocal saying “start the movie already”. It was 25 min of this crap. It was ridiculous. The last movie I saw, Spider-Man No Way Home, was at least 20 min of it. I just don’t enjoy it, it frankly ruins my enjoyment and experience. I pay 9-11 buck to see a movie, I don’t want your god damned commercials. I would honestly gladly pay 2 bucks more for the price so I can set down and have the movie start NOW! no commercials, no previews. You can see previews on Youtube now days.

I have a nice 4K TV. I have qBitto**ent (yep, you heard me right). I don’t need a commercial ridden experience with surround sound coughing. I’ll watch it at home where I can enjoy it.

You could go in 20min after the official start of the movie and skip commercials, that’s what i do most of the time 😁, i would go in on time if you plan to watch an anime movie though, at least where i am anime movies only have 5min of commercials, so best to go in on time first time round just to be sure

80’s…. Midnight…. Rocky Horror Picture Show!

Anyone not old enough to understand what that means I truly feel sorry for you.  561 times and would do it again if any of our local theaters dared to have the balls to do it!!!!!
