Parents sue son for not giving them a grandchild, claim ‘mental harassment’

A couple in India is suing their only son and his wife for not producing a grandchild after six years of marriage.

Sanjeev and Sadhana Prasad, 61 and 57, of the Indian state of Uttarakhand filed the lawsuit on May 7 on the grounds of “mental harassment”…

    Welcome to the 21st century!

The couple is demanding US$650,000 in compensation, should a grandchild not be born in the next year.

Force people to procreate or face a lawsuit.

Has it started to come to that now.

…the parents claim they arranged the marriage to his wife.

“We finally got him married in 2016 with the hope that we would get a grandchild to play with in our retirement age,” the father told the Times of India. “However, almost six years have passed and there is no child. We are facing immense mental harassment.”

From whom?  Your son?  You should be suing the people who ARE harassing you, not your son/daughter-in-law.

The couple added their daughter-in-law’s career, which they claim causes her to reside in a different city than her husband, also causes them “immense pain.”

Once again, welcome to the 21st century.

The parents’ lawyer also told the Times of India this lawsuit is “the first of its kind” in the province, and is likely the first in all of India as well.

“From the parents’ point of view, their demand is justified,” the lawyer, Arvind Srivastava, said. “Their expectations are not wrong.”

Their demand is unjust, and their expectations on the current generation is completely WRONG!

This phrase here tells me that these people weren’t fit to be parents and are now not fit to be grandparents, no adult shoud be depending on a child for their mental wellbeing!

      That is a different culture.

Having several generations all sharing the same home is not uncommon.  Each generation helping each other… until the 21st century.

So I can see why the grandparents are so upset, but the taking them to court is NOT the answer, IMO.

I am aware of the culture, there’s nothing wrong with multiple generations sharing a home and helping eachother out, there is howevre something very wrong, regardless of culture, with being dependent on a child, i’m not saying depending on your adult son/daughter to look after you in your old age, ’cause yes as you get older there are things you’re gonna need help with, i’m saying being emotionally dependent on an actual child! By what these people are saying that is exactly what they expect to be able to do with their future grandchild, when instead they should be the very people the grandchild should be able to depend on. Any adult depending on a child emotionally or otherwise is unfair to the child, and i can understand why their son might not want that for his kid

I think more people need to have no kids. I am all about cutting the population in at least half.

Someone tries to tell me I have to have a kid i’ll be giving them all middle fingers.

Please, no one forward this to my mother.. She has been screaming for 11 years for a grandchild.

In all seriousness culture differences can seem shocking but this is not a normal case the courts in India see. I have several contacts who reside in India and they told me they get bombarded with nagging aunts and crying moms if they dont have children right away but they had never heard of someone being sued for it.
