Prior to being purchased by Google, YouTube was just a fun platform.

It has snowballed into something completely different in the last decade or so to the point where it does the bidding of the goverment directly.  Or does the Goverment do it’s (Google’s) bidding?  The answer to that is it is largely the same group of people who swap back and forth between the 2.

But the market (like nature) hates a vacuum.  So now we have alternatives that are growing rapidly and that is good. Although, you can expect the same forces that deformed YouTube to come after them as well.

The main problem I’ve got with current YouTube is the ridiculous amount of BLOODY ADS there are!

      #282043

Yeah, the ads has wrecked and destroyed that site. Even a lot of places on the internet itself have been ruined by ads and interruptions.
I heard that BRAVE browser will filter out those ads. I still do not have BRAVE, but I’m being forced to get it soon by the ads. Commercials and ads are life-stealing.

      Premium

I have Youtube Premium, and have for many years (since Cobra Kai was originally on it) so I have no adds. It is almost my Cable TV, since I have no had cable in 7+ years, without commercials. I watch people I follow in there daily. Ya, they treat some people like trash, but most streaming content creator sites do that nowdays honestly. I guess I don’t see the “not fun” part like others do because I have no adds and I follow people and things I enjoy, but I understand where others are coming from.

I have used Brave for years, it uses the Chrome code but is more “secure” and “private”. You can use all the plug-ins and extensions from Chrome. Sometimes a site wont work on Brave that will work on Chrome or Edge however. So, it’s not perfect.

Ads, that is a whole other dimension Google added.  I guess it is easy to say they are a negative thing but I believe that is how content folks make their income.

But the thing Google has done to YouTube that makes it not the place it once was is all the political slant.  I don’t mean content.  I mean the censoring and algorithmic decisions that boost what they agree with and hides what they don’t.

Brave is an excellent browser but others can also block the Ads with plug-ins say like FireFox.  I block such shenanigans on a few layers so I have not seen a YouTube ad in a long time so that part can be done.  I think YouTube premium might actually be worth it considering what they offer but I personally refuse to pay that particular devil but I understand the reasons someone would.

The only app I’ve got premium for is Spotify because I use that more than YouTube for music. Or at least audio versions of songs and not the actual music vids themselves or I’d go on YT for that. I also like to be able to see what’s on a CD track list as well which was something that you can’t do unless you’ve got premium.

I will give YouTube this.  And you do not see this mentioned or talked about openly often.  Due to the length of time it’s been around and it’s current ease of use, there is some VERY rare content on there.  I run across stuff now and then that I find enlightening.  For example I saw an interview with Stallone from 1977 about the making of Rocky.  I was not aware he wrote it previously.  I also saw an interview with one of Hitler’s maids.  How absolutely interesting is that?  If you dig on YouTube and exclude the silly current crap, you can really find some stuff.  Just my 2 cents.

I had Youtube RED for Cobra Kai, too. For a while, it was great. I liked super chatting people, too. Then, for no reason, Youtube started asking me for other personal information that I had no interest in giving. It would not let me sign in until I put in more personal information, so in effect, they put like a digital boot obstruction in the way of something that I was already paying for. It’s like, I am paying them, but they are not paying me, and they are telling me what to do? I stopped payment and will not go back. I used Youtube RED for about a year, I think. Maybe two. Then, there was this digital wall, asking me for phone number or something else. Can’t recall. I could not get around it, so I left.

You know what they say about ads and commercials? That those constant interruptions are the cause of lower attention spans in the population. The public no longer has the means to focus on anything due to so many tangents. Susan WoJicki is one of the people I despise most in the life.

I get NO adds on Youtube when I am on my Firefox with the ad blocker set to strict. But when im on the TV it is annoying.

As for the rest, Unless you are a political channel, it is no big deal. Youtube has stupid rules and yes I am for stripping all protections from it afforded by the Gov and even deem SPEECH on it protected under the First Amendment for the US and whatever other laws apply for the US and if in other countries their laws. But those laws apply to the Content Creator not the platform. The Platform should be penalized for restricting the speech.

There really is certain platforms that demand Public Platform protection for the people. You start talking 100’s of millions of users that is now a Public Platform.

Honestly, I can recall a few attempts in my lifetime where the feds tried to institute censorship on media.  For example, the Satanic Panic to censor music or the fairness doctrine to censor talk radio.  Both were just an attempted wedge to get the censorship foot in the door.  They finally did it by doing an end around and coming through private monopolies.

I am OK with private companies banning who they wish freely (so long as the gov is not involved).  HOWEVER, what should be highly illegal as hell is the collusion to squash competition when non-censorious competitors come out.  Google, Twitter and Facebook (to name a few) have been allowed to kill competition even though they are really monopolies.   If the market was allowed to flourish in these cases no one would censor because they would get dropped.

But that’s just my thoughts on it.

I enjoy youtube’s DIY content. My favorites are the I.T. and automotive channels and you can find answers to almost any problem that you have.

With respect to censorship on political, cultural and medical issues — let them censor, they’ll eventually lose that market. I like many others have already started following some content creators on other platforms. The way I see it, as the other platforms grow and offer better packages to content creators, even the non-controversial channels will eventually move as well.

                Premium

@DragonLady : I use 4K Video Downloader to get music video’s of bands I like when released, it works great for high rez. But, I don’t use Spotify or any music streaming, I am not into streaming music. I buy it, or download it (for free, if you know what I mean). I have around 950gb of music & audio books on a hard drive, all 320kbs. I also have around 300gb of music video’s/concerts/TV appearances/etc mostly all in at least 1080 if possible (my Babymetal collection is 120gb by itself….lol). I’ve never liked streaming music, I like HAVING it, and having the entire album. I use a modified Winamp Player to listen to music on my PC. I use VLC player to listen on my Phone with music saved on the internal 500gb SD card.

: Well, I don’t superchat or donate. Nope. Never have, & never will. Not interested in that. I pay for Youtube Premium, that’s enough. I subscribe to someone or something I like, and watch. That is where it ends. I however have subbed 5 dollars a month to Nerdrotic, and that is it. I am not into Superchats, because I don’t care about it or having my comment up for all to see. I am not interested in throwing money at people. I rarely ever even use the chat, 95% of the time I turn it off. It goes by too fast and is just full of nonsense for the most part imo anyway. I am not into memes and that garbage either, when they start going on and on about memes on FNT, I fast forward. I don’t click the like or dislike on anything either, I don’t care about it, at all.

I have though about starting my own Youtube channel, I have a lot to say people would find interesting frankly. I was involved in some shit most creators weren’t involved in when I was younger so I have a unique perspective on current events and culture. My work schedule would only have me doing stuff every other week as I work a week straight. But, I am simply NOT into the meme and chat stuff at all. I think I would just piss most people off because I wouldn’t participate in it much. No watch parties either, I find that stupid. Ya, I am not a people person….go figure. But, I do crave intellectual and CIVIL conversation, which is why I come on here a lot.

I wish Youtube would somehow lose so much money that it somehow ends up going back to the original creators who made it and they brought it back to the way it was.
