Settlement would forgive $6B for defrauded college students

The Biden administration has agreed to cancel $6 billion in student loans for about 200,000 former students who say they were defrauded by their colleges…

    Defrauded?  How so?

The agreement filed Wednesday in San Francisco federal court would automatically cancel federal student debt for students who were enrolled at one of more than 150 colleges and later applied for debt cancellation because of alleged misconduct by the schools.

Almost all the schools involved are for-profit colleges. The list includes DeVry University, the University of Phoenix and other chains still in operation, along with many that have folded in recent years, including ITT Technical Institute.

I recall a DeVry class action lawsuit here back in.. 1998?

BTW, it was thrown out because one line in the fine print said (and to paraphrase) “anything you learn here is co-incidental, we take no responsibility in anything that is taught/learned by our students.”

The deal has yet to be approved by a federal judge. A hearing on the proposal is scheduled for July 28.

If approved, it would mark a major step in the Biden administration’s efforts to clear a backlog of claims filed through the borrower defense program, which allows students to get their federal loans erased if their schools made false advertising claims or otherwise misled them.

So if approved, can people sue public colleges/universities for not giving them an education, but were instead indoctrinated with their woke/sjw/npc agenda?

Under the proposed settlement, anyone who attended an eligible school and applied for cancellation as of Wednesday would get their federal student loans and interest fully forgiven. They would also get refunds for past payments made on those loans.

Too bad those who attended Devry Canada can’t get that as well.

So i went to one of these types of schools when i was younger. I believed all the lies. The promised me job placement, that they worked with the local dealerships and shops to build the classes on what they wanted us to learn and know. So 2 years in, i have one class left i went and applied to 32 dealerships, 20 shops, and 5 tire places. i was laughed out of every single bay. Two different shops told me to my face they would close and burn the place to the ground before they hired from my school. So i had 50k in debt, 10 grand in tools, and the only place that would take me was for minimum wage washing cars at the dealership.  Never turned a wrench professorially in my life.

So yes i do feel like i was defrauded, and there are thousands of stories like this. These places were scams and they preyed on young kids and people in poverty.
