A long time ago in a Galaxy Far Far Away there was… Star Wars: Droids.

This is how it began for me. Before a New Hope. Empire Strikes and  Return of the Jedi, there were the adventures of C3P0 and R2. This animated series was my gateway into Star Wars. I am certainly not the fan I was back in the late 80s/90s (Prequels and Sequels saw to that) but when I was a kid I can vividly remember rushing home from school and tuning in for the adventures of R2 and 3P0. Then one evening I was playing with my Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles (yep, in the UK they were Heros, not Ninjas, a topic for another time) when suddenly I heard someone yell R2. What? I stopped playing, looked at the TV and R2D2 is in a swamp with a man and a green creature that sounds like Grover from Sesame Street. And what’s more R2 appears to be real and not Cartoon. I ran into the kitchen screaming Mum, Mum, there’s a movie of R2 and he’s not a cartoon. That’s nice darling (mum was cooking and could care less) I rushed back (Turtles pushed aside) and saw 3P0 in a ship with a man, woman, and something that looked like Bigfoot in Harry and the Hendersons. This is so cool. I remember thinking how did I not know of the Droids film and why did mum not take me to see it?

I sat down, transfixed, as I watched with amazement at the  Star Wars: Droids Movie. As soon as the credits rolled I was hooked and wanted to see more. Dad told me that there were 2 other films and took me to blockbuster videos to rent them. Doesn’t say Star Wars Droids dad? Trust me, he said, there in it. Ok. We took it home and I could not believe what I was seeing. OMG. I was so worried about R2 and 3P0 in New Hope, I thought for the longest time that Darth Vader was after them (kind of was really) and would hurt them if he captured them.

As time went on and the Special Editions set came out I really grew into Star Wars and became obsessed like everyone else. One Christmas I had Star Wars everything. Turtles were old Star Wars was the new thing. Then I did a stupid thing called growing up and noticing girls! Life was never the same again. I stayed with Star Wars for a while but once the Phantom Menace happened I just lost interest, although in hindsight it’s not as bad as I remember and certainly better than what came along next with the sequels. But to me, Star Wars will always be the adventures of R2 and 3P0! The Star Wars Droids.

I wish they would release this on DVD or Blu-ray as a complete set. I have a DVD of it but it’s like a random bunch of episodes that don’t include the first one. Does anyone know of plans to put it out on physical media? And do Lucasfilm/Disney own the rights? If they put that on Disney + I’d sign up in a heartbeat. I also remember the Ewok Cartoon and bought some random EPs on VHS one year at a Comic-Con, But it’s the Star Wars Droids Complete set that my heart desires.  Droids_SWA_2019_3

R2 was my favorite Star Wars character as a kid and is still one of my favorites as an adult. The Death Star trench run was one of my favorite Star Wars moments when I was young, and part of that is due to R2D2 riding along with Luke as they went to blow up the Death Star. This was also what made me a Star Wars fan to begin with.
