I’m fine with both. Generally I watch subs when it’s old, classic, vintage anime, because dubs back then just weren’t… very good, to put it mildly. But there can be other factors which make me prefer a sub over a dub, or vice-versa.
Dubs at least started improving somewhere in the 2000’s (such Black Lagoon and Hellsing: Ultimate. And I absolutely loved Troy Baker as Pain in Naruto Shippuden). However these days I’m pretty disillusioned with the state of modern dubs, particularly when FUNimation is involved. When it comes to anime that has a larger Western appeal to it (such as Attack on Titan), they’ll at least put in the effort to deliver a faithful and believable take on the characters. But when it comes to anime that has more appeal to certain niche markets (Koboyashi’s Dragon Maid), it’ll be half-assed. It seems like there is this undercurrent of contempt for Japanese pop culture, what with, shall we say, differences of expression on human sexuality, particularly the female anatomy, in addition to the more traditionalist views of men and women, which run counter to certain ideals in the West. I think we can all tell there are folks within the Western anime industry who seem to greatly dislike otaku culture.
