You hear it ALL the time. Learn to code. Teach your kids to program. Need to change careers, become a programmer.

I find myself suspicious of any large scale “movement” telling me what to do. Whether that is the COVID vaccine or something like this.

I believe all this is, is a push from the big tech companies from behind the scenes so they can flood the market in the long-term with cheap labor because they know they do indeed need a constant stream of software folks.

The whole push to get women in tech is just the same thing over again.

So this is not someone trying to get you to be more successful in your life. These are just companies/schools trying to make a buck while doing the bidding of the big players.

Again, be suspicious of any large scale push like this even if it seems the intent is good. The whole thing we heard for decades about “everyone needs to go to college”. How did that work out? Do you think that intention was ever anything more than to make money and indoctrinate people?

      My take on it all.

This has been going on for decades.

I know more than a few people in “I.T.” they like their jobs and have been working at it for years, they have all that wonderful education and training etc and will probably be working until they are in their late 60’s

I know more than a few guy’s who never went to college and Owned their own business by their early 30’s. They were Plumbers, Framers, Electricians, Roofers “people in the skilled trades” By 40 most had their house paid off, by 50 they were scaling back and letting employee’s do more and they were enjoying the fruits of their labor. By 60 most were {semi-retired} doing as they wished when they wished. No they will never fully retire as its what they love, and typically their kids are running the business now, and the old farts enjoy still popping in from time to time or doing job take-offs. But it is their choice.

Yes we need people in tech, but we need the trades even more… Tech does not build your home and sure doesnt unplug a clogged sewer.

I cannot tell if you are agreeing or disagreeing but you make excellent points either way.

But let’s start out like this. You know people that have been in IT for years. I have been in IT for decades.

In the late 90’s and early 2000’s you could make serious bucks quite easily because the workforce was not flooded with people and China/India were not subcontracting many jobs nor were H1B1 visas an issue.

But now we are post all of that and it is MUCH harder to make a living in IT than it was before. Sure, us older folks that have been it in forever are sitting pretty but with everything I mentioned and the continued job market flood that’s going on and coming, wages will drop and things will get harder.

This is not to say it’s not worth doing. My ONLY point was to say the huge push comes from on high to continue to flood the market and drive wages down.

But yes! Trades are the way to go!

All a college diploma guarantees you is a lot of debt. I am of a fan of preaching that if your chosen profession needs college then go and do your best. If not, then don’t go just to go, and maybe pick a trade.

I am saying we need both.

Why the drive for tech is no secret, College $$$$$$$$$$ that is why I chuckle when I hear politicians wanting to forgive all that debt, its a great talking point for votes, but in no way are they serious about is as that revenue is insane. Where does some of that money go (political donations) in one way or another. All the talk about an Executive Order is laughable, even if a POTUS does it, there will be an instant challenge and as we have seen the courts keep telling congress(Power of the Money is your Duty per the Constitution) the EO talk is so they do not have to look bad an explain they wont do it.

Funny thing is there is ways to have a large portion of student debt removed “legally” and its not hard to do, it just takes not being lazy.

Now even as a tradesman I advise people to go to night school at a local College and get at minimum a degree in Con-law and Business law along with a Business financial class. IF you have a desire to own a company it is more than smart. But that is up to the person, going to college should be about helping you in a career not a job. I know you understand the difference so glaze over this next part.

I know there are younger members here, A Job is something you may have a short time then find another and another etc… A career is something you will do all your working life. If you find a career you will never work a day in your life as it is something you enjoy and something you will want to learn as much about to make that career even more enjoyable and profitable.

Ok back to our conversation, Lazy is the biggest problem I see in people coming out of college, they think they are “owed” a salary and benifits along with a title and do not want to work. I mentioned debt forgiveness, many programs offer it such as teaching and medical fields, they will pay off your student debt or arrange a portion of it removed for time worked in the field. Again lazy people dont want to do that they want to go to some business right away and the cry about being owed and their debt.

I swear, I have to wonder what happened to peoples work ethic. When I started I worked full time, went to school at night and my nights not at school has a second job and still was raising my family. Now after 4 years I got my degree’s and was able to drop school (except continued ed) and drop the second job. No college debt as the second job took care of that. But i was raised to have that kind of ethic which is really writing this what I think is missing (work ethic and family ethics and morals).

You’re not on your own mustang!

There’s some lessons that can only be learnt not taught! I had to learn from a young age that if you didn’t work just as hard as the adults, you wouldn’t be eating for the next few days, or even if the lights would come on when you got home.
I learnt just as fast as you’d expect from a kid and the hard times are hard as nails!

Anyways later in life no one can touch me! When it comes to work ethics, it will not beat me!

So yeah you definitely need hands on lads just as much as desk lads.

If I were a young man today of college age I would go to a trade school. You can make good money in trades, make a career out of it and NOT start out with a ton of debt.

But I agree with you in that it seems the whole “go to college” thing has be driven so hard that people just seem to expect that passing college auto gives them a career when that could not be further from the truth.

Personally I consider myself blessed and lucky. I LOVE what I do so I don’t work everyday I often times am having fun. I have been working fulltime since I was 16 and I have done very well for myself in IT. But I have a strict work ethic and I think I am good at what I do. So it is VERY much possible to succeed without college.

Alot of businesses and corporations have been trying to get more IT people hired, but can’t.

There are not enough trained people to do the job.

And with the explosion of e-commerce and smartphone apps, the demand is still high.

I am not so sure about that. I think it might be true to a degree but I think you hear that cry a lot so as to excuse H1B visas and subcontracting to India, China and other places. I don’t believe those actions are taken out of lack of workforce so much as lowering costs.

For example (and there are many), I recall a few years back Disney basically called in their entire IT staff and said they were being laid off and they could either leave or train their foreign replacements and be employed a little longer.

And in this conversation we should not conflate “IT” (which can be anything technical as it relates to computing) and programmers or developers. The point of me opening this thread was to directly address the hard push for software developers. The push is not for IT in general as I see it.

In summary, I think there is a need for more IT folks but most of the movement you see with foreign workers/contracts is to lower costs.

A friend of mine (who is the same age as me, in her early 30’s) who I’ve known since I started secondary school (that’ll be high school for anyone overseas) already has her own online business selling art patterns that she’s done herself. Her drawings are 10x better than what I’ve seen coming from Marvel these days and that’s saying something about Marvel’s current artwork! Oh and may I point out the fact that she is also dyslexic as well?

As for the computer thing…I admit that I’ve been using them from a very early age since my first was a gaming computer (an Amega if anyone wants to know but I can’t remember the model 😳). So it’s only natural that for ten years up until last year’s “pandemic” I was doing office work. Sadly, I’ve not been working since last March because of the current nonsense but I’m considering doing freelance writing (I hate the fact that I got inspired by ‘The Sims’ for this😂) as at least I can work from home which is appropriate for me due to my current circumstances.

Also, unlike me, not many people are computer literate.

I did try to do a blogging website some weeks ago but I’ve not been back on it since. Mainly because I keep forgetting about it more than anything😂.
