Originally, liberalism emerged among the political right. The bourgeoisie was considered right wing until the 70s or 80s. Classic liberalism was essentially libertarianism.
The early left wing / socialist movement, which grew in power after the French revolution, was against free markets and often against private property rights.
The left was never liberal except for a brief hickup during the 50s and 60s in the US, when the left supported “sexual liberation”, drugs, abortion and artistic freedom, while the at that time conservatives were pushing for massive censorship and draconian punishments for drug use. 20 years for smoking pot was a thing.
