I seriously doubt it.  There is too much money making going on and too many politicians who are under China’s thumb.  I think this is all a dog and pony show.

I am not sure why the Apple and Play stores don’t just remove it under their own guidelines however.  Any app that gathered that much data and was known to be shipping it off someplace else would be kicked off the stores normally.

Again, everyone is making money hand over fist and China gets to have their propaganda machine on everyone’s phone.

Basically every single social media platform gathers user data. Isn’t banning apps ”cancel culture”?

I think each individual should have the right to download it or not. And I’m pretty anti TikTok, but for a different reason. It’s a braindead platform that is just full of lobotomized horse shit from weird furries talking about pronouns to psychotic redpill manosphere people leading people down the pipeline of alt-right

Tucker’s suggesting this bi-partisan move by officials to ban TikTok would give the Federal Government the power to punish American Citizens and regulate how they communicate with one another. The meat of that discussion starts around the 4:00 mark.

An American company gathering data is quite different than a enemy foreign power doing so.  Now, NEITHER is good or right.  It is just that one is much worse than the other.

Is that cancel culture?  No.  A person is not being cancelled by a mob it’s a legislative body legally deciding via the law.

From what I have seen of the proposed law in which they would “ban” TikTok yes that could be the case.  Did you really think they would not take the opportunity to enforce more control?

The RESTRICT act aims to tackle TikTok. But it’s overly-broad and has major privacy and free speech implications.

then don’t download it. Non Americans may feel the same about Facebook and other platforms collecting data but I bet people would lose their shit if countries all over the world started banning American social media platforms. Also, banning an entire app would be near impossible. People who really want access to TikTok would find a way around the ban through VPN and other ways to change IP address.

And idk about your position on the matter but I would like to hear if @comicsgate agrees with this, as he/she still can’t comprehend the fact that Ukraine shut down churches and political figures with ties to Russia after the war started as it’s tyrannical and whatever. I’m curious if he keeps the same energy with banning Chinese platforms.

so it’s canceling in a bigger proportion. Or at the very least censorship. Not very freedom-like, if you ask me.

          “then don’t download it”

In many cases with devices from the major carriers it comes preloaded and you cannot remove it or it is difficult to do so.  Same with facebook and many other such apps.

“so it’s canceling in a bigger proportion”

So we should allow an enemy foreign power to knowingly spy on our citizens?  That’s not very freedom like either.

Montana becomes the first state to ban TikTok.

Not sure this is helpful for them to do it.  It makes me nervous when goverment bans anything.  I think the root issue here is that Google and Apple know full well how malicious this app is as far as security and data collection goes (not to even mention the cultural effects) and they simply don’t care and probably because they support China in general (this is where all their devices are made) and probably get paid a large amount (directly on indirectly) to look the other way.

In my mind Google and Apple need to be hauled in front of Congress and answer the charges for the security stuff and why they allow it.  But that needs to be done with some actual consequences and not just the usual useless dog and pony show.
