I do not think this surprises anyone at this point.

Sony PlayStation to remove access to some movies, even if you’ve purchased them

      #275553

All streaming is just a temporary license to view/play the products.

It can be removed (and edited) at any time.

Hence the reason I purchase physical versions when I can, while still available.

And this is happening not just with movies and games.

It is also happening with there you live.  Home ownership or permanent renter class.

Leasing vehicles or owning them, or forced onto mass transit as you can’t afford the automobiles anymore.

A permanent slave (worker) class to the elites.  Yes, a SLAVE class.

This is why you don’t buy digital. “shrug”

Aside from owning physical copies of movies, TV Shows, video games, music, books, or any other type of medium you can think of like someone else pointed out, it may be worth looking into Plex. Plex can be used for your very own digital media library streaming service. An example I can use is iTunes. If you had CDs, you could rip copies to digitize to your digital library to listen on your devices. Plex is like that but for more than just music. You can rip TV shows and movies from discs you own to watch digitally from that streaming service as if you had a subscription to Netflix or something. As long as your hard drive, computer, and Internet are fine, the movies you put on your Plex account will always be there.

Personally speaking, I am an avid user of Plex and advocate it’s use.  In fact, currently in my house, there is a dedicated PC for it and a NAS unit for that PC.  :)

          This is why piracy exists.

“piracy” – anything big corp does not want you to do

            #275576

We, the G&G team/site, do NOT promote taking of things you have not purchased. @Wisdom @Vknid

If you backup something you legally purchased, that is OK.

Anything else (or suggestions) is something we should NOT be promoting on this site.

No one promoted anything that I see.  Plex is NOT a piracy app if that’s what you mean.  It’s simply just a commercial home media center type situation. It is not even opensource.  In fact, to that point, I am a paid user of Plex.

Wasn’t promoting it, just stating matter of factly that this is why it exists.

Case in point: no one pirates Jeremy’s youtube videos. Or even most music anymore. Why? Because a good system of monetization has been found. The music industry took almost 3 decades to switch from selling CDs to selling downloads and finally monetizing free streaming. Same thing would work for movie studios.

I maintain piracy exists as a reaction to bad distribution models.

I do believe the music industry REALLY shot themselves in the foot in the early 2000’s.  They should have bought or hired Napster and started to sell music via that method.  So instead of putting a little cash into development of a platform to make money, they spent millions on court costs suing people and alienating customers.

Now you know who has made a similar mistake more or less?  Netflix.  They are now BlockBuster because the market landscape changed and they did not adapt fast enough.   But who got it right is Amazon.  They have a whole marketplace of content where you can get almost anything for just a few bucks.  That marketplace situation is the current future of streaming media.

It is all very interesting actually. But as time has shown, lack of access to content and high prices will foster piracy.  That is why I think the Amazon marketplace is such a genius move.  Access to almost anything for relatively cheap prices.

Yes, you can use Plex, but I prefer this way:

I have a hard drive on my PC that whatever I place on it I can stream to my TV using WMP (Windows Media Player). I download the movie, put it on the drive, go to Sources on my TV and go to the WMP stream (you can name it) and watch the movie. Been doing it since the PS3 days, because PS3 could stream from your PC too. I think a lot of people don’t know you can use WMP in that way. It does require adding the mkv/mp4 codec to your windows registry, but it works great imo.

You have to make sure your PC and TV are plugged into the same router as well. It’s essentially your own private streaming hub.

That’s essentially what I do with Plex.  I have my Plex PC and NAS storage for it. But to access it I have Roku’s on all my TV’s with the Plex app.  Not only can I watch my media on any TV but I can also watch live TV as I have an antenna and a tuner card in my Plex server.

Now clearly we can do cool stuff with digital media collections now.  Imagine how much further we would be if the music industry had embraced all that instead of resisted it for 10 years.

                    Buy Physical.
                    Download Digital.

                    ;)
