YouTube Is About to Make a Big Change Viewers Are Going to Absolutely Despise

The last thing YouTube viewers want is more, unskippable advertisements, but that’s exactly what viewers on the television apps are going to see going forward.

I have already been experiencing ALOT of those.

At its Brandcast event for advertisers, YouTube announced that it is bringing 30-second unskippable ads to connected TVs. Advertisers who want that captive audience…

Not unless you PAY YT NOT to get those ads, but this article does not state that anywhere that I saw.

Digital video advertising spending is expected to grow 17% year over year to $55.2 billion in 2023…

Still not enough for these people.

I have seen these “unskippable” ADs during live streams, during live gaming streams.

YouTube is offering advertisers a sweeter deal at a time when many economists have an ‘if not when’ attitude towards the chances of a recession this year. If that happens, advertising revenue could take a hit as businesses trim budgets.

All those ADs are doing is PISSING me OFF at YT and at those ADVERTISERS.

And as we have seen with Bud Light, Coors Lights, and now Dove… if you PISS-OFF your paying consumers, you will LOSE more than what you hope to have gained by these ADs.

How that will help them in this predicted recession, as those marketing morons.

Luckily, those forced non-skippable during some live streams have not yet hit that 30s mark each (but I still get two 12-15s each ADs).

They say to use the BRAVE browser. I have not done that yet. The ads are insane. Susan Wojicki is one of my least favorite people.

There will always be adblockers. I haven’t seen an ad on youtube in a decade

When Cable TV first came out one of the benefits touted to entice subscribers was the ad-free format. Eventually though they did infiltrate the platform to the extent that one couldn’t distinguish it from terrestrial TV.

The same thing is happening here.

As the largest streaming service which offers the most variety of content YouTube probably believes that it has a captive audience so they can get away with it. That assessment is probably right.

    YouTube in 2007: Advertise yourself.

    YouTube in 2023: Advertising adverts.

I suspect what is going on here is with the economy sucking everyone is tightening their belt.  And by that I mean companies are offering you less and charging you more so that while you might financially suffer they won’t.  This is YouTube’s version of that.

Netflix pulled a similar trick.  They were going to roll out that no password sharing policy then took it back after the backlash.  But guess what.  They did it anyway just not how you think.  They used to allow you either 2 or 4 concurrent streams depending on your plan.  So instead of the password thing they got super strict about the number of devices accessing your account as a whole and not necessarily just currently.  So they did not do the password thing but they ended up heavily restricting accounts and sharing anyway.

I’ve been monetized for 2 years now, I just this week broke the 200$ mark lol
I am both a Content Creator & a Consumer of content. I pay the 12$ monthly fee to avoid the ads, they still get paid for my view even though I don’t get fed the ad.
As a consumer I 100% agree that the ads SUCK!!! But then there is the content creator side of me that is like “But that’s how we get paid.”
I would love to say “Screw YT, I am disabling the unskipable ads, I want my viewers to enjoy my content 1st & foremost!” but the truth is, I love making videos, I spend hours editing each video, games, movies, Stuff & Things I do in videos cost money & lastly I want to be able  to make a living off my talents & my own sweat from my brow, so I have to enable the ads.
Getting monetized is one of the hardest things to do on YT, millions of people try it every year. Most people don’t ever break 500 subscribers. Then you have the 4k hours watched in 365 days, that is also hard to do because  even the BIG channels have many viewers that drop of within the first 30 seconds of the videos. So yeah, you are damn right I will enable the ads. It’s not an F-You to the viewers, it’s us trying to make a name for ourselves.
Many bigger channels disable their unskipable ads once they have a steady income flow. Hopefully that will happen for me as well in a year or hopefuly less.
You have many channels that buy their way up one way or another & they just want to do it because they can make money making stupid videos. But I enjoy doing it, I mean after 4 years making content & getting monetized on my 2nd year & making 200$ in those 2 years didn’t show my love for the game, I don’t know what else would.
A lot of bigger creators know who I am but there are conflicts of interest between youtubers. For example, some won’t work with small guys because they can’t profit from them. Then you have others that see you as a threat so if they promote you, YOU will take away from them. I experience this because even though I am a good friendly guy with fun videos, I have a lot of confidence in my work & that is also off-putting for people that don’t want to be overshadowed. So collaborations are not a thing that I have the luxury of from bigger guys, but I have done some stuff with smaller or same size channels.

Lastly, the thing people forget to separate is Youtube from The Content Creator. Yes, be upset with the ads, but it’s not the fault of the personality. I see so many comments in the comments sections of the videos telling off the Creator for the ads. It’s free content with some interruptions. Do you want to work for free? The stupidest argument I hear is “Yeah but all you do is make videos.” or “All your do is play video games or talk about stuff” “It’s so easy!”
No, it’s not So Easy Bro!
Take Streaming for example. You have to play a game which occupies a lot of your faculties to begin with, then you have to entertain your viewers (even if you have 0 viewers, you have to be entertaining for those that might tune in to watch the VOD)  and if you are lucky your viewers will interact with you, so you have to Play a game well enough, be entertaining & chat with people as they go. Are you doing that when you are alone just playing a game?
Reviews, you have to watch the movie, record your reaction or review, Edit your video, which for me means finding clips, pictures, memes, music…etc put everything together in a manner that hopefully will keep people watching for more than 30 seconds & on average, editing a movie review takes me 6-20 hours depending what  I want to do. I know people that publish 1 video a month because that’s how much work they put in.
It’s not “So easy bro!” lol
I pay the 12$ premium not for Youtube, I pay it so the 100s of hours of videos I watch pays the content creators. Ok also so I don’t see the ads for Miller Light :P

All this is from the perspective of a Consumer & Creator.
