After an official announcement a couple of years ago and some convention teases since then, Disney has released a teaser for one of its many upcoming animated sequels, Zootopia 2. And I mean a teaser; this clip reveals absolutely nothing about the plot, sans the involvement of a snake we already knew about. It makes sense, as this is a teaser and not a full trailer, but I am left questioning what the point of “teasers” is almost every time I see one. Check out the Zootopia 2 teaser here:
I would have been excited for Zootopia 2 if it had been announced shortly after the first Zootopia. Zootopia is one of the modern Disney movies most apt for continuation because its world is creative and interesting. Although I liked Frozen II and what I watched of the Big Hero 6 TV show, Zootopia, on the surface, seems the most expandable of them all. Judy and Nick are also likable leads and different for a Disney movie. I love the first Zootopia, but these days, that’s not enough to keep me from dreading a sequel or spinoff.
Zootopia 2 has the same directorial team as the first movie, except for Rich Moore (Wreck-It Ralph). Byron Howard (Tangled, Bolt) and Jared Bush (Encanto) are co-directing the new installment; I guess that’s encouraging, or it should be. To clarify, I don’t think anything about this film looks particularly bad; I repeat, they haven’t shown us anything by which to judge it in the teaser. But after things like Incredibles 2, Moana 2, and countless other mistakes and mishaps, I find myself gripped by fear when a great animated movie gets a sequel. They’ve added Quinta Brunson to the cast of Zootopia 2 as Dr. Fuzzby and Ke Huy Quan as Gary the snake, and, of course, Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman are returning as the lead characters, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. I don’t know much about Brunson, but, of course, I like the other three. I keep noticing things that should excite me about Zootopia 2, but they don’t.
In terms of the Zootopia 2 teaser itself, it’s goofy, if intentionally so. I don’t like the style of music used, and it doesn’t necessarily make me think of the first movie. I like seeing all the characters from the first movie again, and obviously, the animation is top-notch. The bits I enjoyed the most seem to be actual scenes from the film, like Nick and Judy fleeing from the cops with Gary in tow. I don’t want them to spoil the movie in its marketing, but I generally find that to be true; I just like seeing parts of the movie more than generic marketing and loud music. Disney probably doesn’t think it needs to do that since we’ve all seen the first Zootopia and are more worried about capturing the attention of little kids. I know this is just a teaser, and you’re not really supposed to expect much from it, but it just didn’t do much for me.
With all of that being said, I will be seeing the movie, and there will be a review for Zootopia 2 here on Geeks + Gamers when it opens in November. What do you think of the Zootopia 2 teaser? Are you going to watch the movie in theaters, skip it, or wait for it to make its way to Disney+? Let us know in the comments!
